How Can I Confirm Com Port Failure

We have our HP UPS attached to COM1 on our DL380 G4.
Following a server reboot (in order for Windows Updates to take effect), serial communication to the UPS has been lost.
We have reconnected the UPS to another server and that works fine. Tried putting it back to the original server and failure is seen again.
Is there anything I can do to test further or should I just log an engineer visit?

Re: How Can I Confirm Com Port Failure

Hi Chris,

Check for any Event IDs logged.

Check for bent or broken Pins on the Serial COM Port.

Erase the Non Volatile Memory or run a System ROM Update.

Shut the server down, and remove the power cords from it. Leave the power completely disconnected for about 2 minutes, then plug it back in and boot it back up.

If problem still persists, then replace Serial COM Port (if embedded replace system board)

Also try updating all the firmwares for the UPS.

Also try to disable the CLI feature.
The instructions mentioned here:

Hope this works!!!!

Re: How Can I Confirm Com Port Failure

Hi Chris,

Please check the follwoing CUSTOMER ADVISORY if this hepls:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_EX050502_CW01

Also what I would suggest is, Disconnect the UPS from serail port, goto device manager. Remove/Uninstall the Com1 port. Click on Action and Scan for new HW changes. It will redetect the Com1. Now connect the UPS and check if you are able to communicate.

Regards,
Raj.

Re: How Can I Confirm Com Port Failure

FIXED:
Thanks both for the replies.
Followed the advisory message but fault remained.
Followed suggestion of removing COM port, powering down server and removing AC input for a couple of minutes.
Re-scan found the port on Startup.
UPS communication was then re-established.

Upgraded to latest HP Power Manager for both the Mangement and Remote Agents.

Once again, many thanks
Regrads
Chris
