How does NIC teaming discover a link failure

Setup:
Windows NT server with NC3131 configured for
NFT. The server is connected to LAN switch.

Question:
How does the NIC detect a network failure?!?
Does the NIC send "heartbeats" or does it simply checking to see if the link is up or down.

Re: How does NIC teaming discover a link failure

Both.

Loss of phantom voltage (link) will cause a failover. Periodic heartbeat is also used to detect loss of connectivity.
