How many LTO3 drives can be directly attached to a DL580 ?
Instead of buying a tape library, I would like to directly attached four LTO3 tape drives to a Proliant DL580 backup server running BrightStor ARCserve Backup 11.1.
I would appreciate it if someone could advise if this is feasible after taking into consideration the total throughput of the four LTO3 drives and the maximum number of adapters that can be added to the server to connect the drives.

Re: How many LTO3 drives can be directly attached to a DL580 ?
Hi Alex
DL580 G3 has 5 Standard 64-bit PCI-X slots. You may go for 4 SCSI adapters to connect 4 drives. But this kind of environment is not common. It is advisable to go for Tape Library with Fiber connectivity for unattended backups.
Regards
Mahesh

Re: How many LTO3 drives can be directly attached to a DL580 ?
Thanks for sharing your experties.
This setup (drives direct attached to backup server) is meant for the disaster recovery site. Due to budget constraint, we plan for attended restore, and without the use of expansive HBA and fibre channel switch.
Can you share what you think would be the other shortcoming of this setup ?

Hi Alex
I don't anticipate any issue. Try to use independent backup Windows for all drives in order to utilise SCSI bandwidth to maximum
