How to configure Raid 10 on a P440ar controller

I'm new to the tech field and I have what is probably a real simple question. How do you configure Raid 10 on the P440ar controller. We just got a new server in with 8 900GB drives and our accounting vendor wants the Raid setup for Raid 10 due to SQL being installed.

Thanks.

Hi,

HP Smart Array Controllers User Guide for HP ProLiant Gen9 Servers
http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04441382

HP SSA is the main tool for configuring arrays on HP Smart Array controllers and HP Smart HBAs.

HP Smart Storage Administrator User Guide
http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03909334

Refer to, Accessing HP SSA in the offline environment or Accessing HP SSA in the online environment, from the above guide.

Thank You!

Re: How to configure Raid 10 on a P440ar controller

Suman,

Thanks for your reply and I did read through those guides. From what I understand I need to create 4 mirriored arrays and then combine them into Raid 0? If that is the case how do I actually combine them into a single raid?

I'm not sure how this is any advantage of just having one mirrored array with 4 * 2 disks.

I.e. you won't get much benefit of your pseudo RAID 10 over RAID 1, where each slice is 900 GB.

If your P440ar doesn't support RAID 10 natively, you can't get it.

From Suman's first link, it appears that P440ar supports RAID 10.

So what option do you select to actually make the 4 mirrored arrays into one Raid 10 drive?

I assume you take the 8 drives and make one RAID 10 array.

You don't start with existing arrays.

Thats my point when you select all the drives you don't get a Raid 10 option. From what I read you need to create 4 mirriored arrays and then combine them. So how do you actually do that?

Select RAID 1+0

Re: How to configure RAID10 on a P440ar controller

From SSA guide:

...When the array has more than two physical drives, drives are mirrored in pairs, and the fault-tolerance
method is known as RAID 1+0 or RAID 10

So the controller is creating 2 groups of drives, stripes the data across all disks in one group and do the same as a mirror copy with the other group.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
