I am a total Linux Newbie and this is my first post. I have managed to install SuSE Pro 9.2 on my DL380 G2 but when I tried to install the Linux PSP I get an error message stating that the Kernel version I am running is 2.6 & that the PSP supports the 2.4 Kernel. I also get a message stating that a .xml file is missing too support the hpasm.rpm file.
Any assistance anybody can provide would be great!! Please bare in mind though that i only started using Linux after christmas so I still have a lot to learn.
Many Thanks

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
I suggest you to check on HP site if they already have their PSP for Suse 9.
If no, you still may use linux, PSP isn't mandatory.

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
Many thanks for you response. The reason I wish to install the PSP is because the servers fans run at full speed all the time. I have found that the hpasm module (In the PSP)detects the fan speed and allows spin down during boot.
I have looked on the HP site for an RPM for SLES9 but I can't find one for the G2 version of my server i.e. i386 platform.
I have the server in my spare room & the noise it makes with the fans running at full speed is awfull. This is the newest hpasm file I can find for my machine. As I say though. I can't install this as it is compiled for Kernel 2.4.x-xx.
hpasm-7.1.0-145.sles7.i386.rpm.
Can anyone tell me if the i586.rpm ones designed for the P4 platform would work??
Thanks again.

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
The problem isn't differant Pentiums, but different kernels.
AFAIK, HP SmartStart disk provides some utility for setting fan speed.

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
AFAIK, HP SmartStart disk provides some utility for setting fan speed. Sorry but i am very new to the furums pages and don't know what the abreviation AFAIK means. Can you please explain??
I have tried to install several different PSP's from:- The smartstart cd v6.5, v7.00 & v7.10, from the seperate Software Support Pack & Firmware Support Pack, both v7.10 downloaded from HP software support pages.
Still no luck. I'm going to try the latest release PSP v7.11 released on the 29/01/05 but is does state that it only supports the G3 & G4 revisions of the DL380 server & I have a G2 so I doubt that will work either.
With regards to my understanding of the i386 (pentium 3) & i586 (pentium 4) file types. Am I misunderstanding the file types & that the i386 & i586 are for different Kernel versions and nothing to do with the type of processor?
Many thanks & best regards

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
The HP ProLiant Linux Deployment Utility requires source code
for the kernel-default-2.6.8-24 kernel be available for building and installing
certain drivers included in this bundle.
The directory, /usr/src/linux-2.6.8.SuSE, is either missing, or is empty.
Kernel source code may also be made available via NFS from a
remote system.

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
and/or http://www.netlingo.com/
2) i386 is Intel 386 architecture [we have AT, XT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium, ... - right?]
Kernel i586 is suitable for Pentiuum and up,
i686 for Pentium Pro and up
3) in order to receive kernel sources you should install kernel-source-2.6-x.y.z.rpm from one of installation CDs.

Re: How to install PSP for DL380 G2 Suse Linux 9.2 Kenel 2.6
Again may thanks for you help and advice. I now understand the architecture definitions and indeed it has nothing to do with what I thought it did. Thanks also you the link to Netlingo. Most helpful!!
I have now installed the kernel-source-2.6.x.y.z.rpm file and tried a reboot then ran the install again. No change I'm afraid. I still get the following error messages.
The bundle XML file ./BP000201.xml is not supported on this version of Linux.
No supported Bundle XML files were found.
Error 3: A Bundle XML file to support this version of Linux was not found.
Please consult the www.hp.com website to determine if a supported
Linux PSP is available for this version of Linux.
Do I need to run some sort of rpmbuild command to get things to work?
Thanks & best regards

SolutionYes, the PSP install script runs only on supported distributions (like SLES 8 or SLES 9), i have no idea how to modify it so it will run on Suse 9.2 professional.
There is a document called "Managing ProLiant servers with Linux - HowTo" at http://53.143.62.80/twiki/pub/DBLinux/HPInfos/management_agents.pdf
The chapter "Manual Installation" describes the installation without the script simply using the rpm's.
Following this instructions you should be able to install the psp on your server.
I strongly recommend you to use a supported os like SLES 8 or SLES 9 (if you prefer Suse) on a certified hardware.
Good Luck and regards,
Kai-Uwe
