ILO Remote Console Screen goes black

We are having problems with installing windows 2003 server using ILO on a HP DL380 G4 series server. We have no problems access ILO or the remote console screen. We can map the virtual drive it sees the Img file and starts the windows install. After coping all of the files and the server reboots. We get the windows splash screen for about 4 seconds and the screen goes black. If we reboot the server we get the windows server 2003 logo screen that says setup is being restarted and it just hangs there. There is no change after several hours. One server we left it over night with no change. Same problem if we use a cd instead of a ISO or IMG file. We have the latest firmware 1.91. Has anyone else experienced this problem before?

It is possible to install the OS remotely using iLO, even though it is not recommended since it is going to take for ever to install, since you are doing that through the network it might take even a couple of days to install. Do it but with the OS CD physically installed in the server.

well "a couple of days" for me will be like so what the idea is of having ilo if it is going to take a couple of days to install... no way.

I have used ilo - virtual media lot of times to install Windows and can take 1 - 2 hours. So your issue is that your installation is not responding as it should


- so my first recommendation would be
update firmware latest is 1.92 version
since you have no OS
you must use this

- another thing would be update system ROM in case any conflict between OS and system ROM version

- Clear NVRAM - Erase utiltiy using Smartstart CD which I recommend you as well to do this installation
Erasing NVRAM and HDDs can be a trick too

and all above fails I recommend you go onsite and check server

Thanks Gary for responding, but I have been using ILO to install all of my server OS's.

Karlo thank you as well. I will try your suggestions and let you know what happens. I thought I had the latest firmware 1.91, but I see that I don't. I also thought I had downloaded the latest CD 8.0. I will try all that you suggested. I will post updates to this site later.

well latest is 8.1

and I just confirmed that the CD 8.1 does not include 1.92 update you need to download it using Link I gave you
