INCREASE RAID 1 on Server - Blade - HP - WS460c Gen9

HI all,

need your support here:

system details:

- Server - Blade - HP - WS460c Gen9

- OS: windows server 2012 R2

-SMART ARRAY P244BR
-SMART STORAGE ADMINISTRATOR 2.60.18.0

current configuration:

RAID 1

2 PHYSICAL DISKS : 120GB sata  SSD

4 LOGICAL DRIVE :

logica drive  1 (C:\  THE OS DRIVE)

logica drive  2 (D:\ DRIVE)

logica drive  3 (E:\ DRIVE)

logica drive  4 (F:\ DRIVE)

Requirement:

I need to exted ONLY logical drive 4 (F:\  drive)

I bought 2 new disks with  200GB  SATA  SSD

I have daily back up so no problem with data

Which is the best approch to follow?

I would like, if possible,  VERIFY if I can avoid to reinstall OS, for example :

1) replace one disk first  - wait for  rebuild

2) replace second one - wait for rebuild

3) extend logical drive 4 (and then F drive) via SMART STORAGE ADMINISTRATOR

any suggestion ? can someone share the procedure?

thank you a lot

Marco

Hello,

You have created RAID 1 with the 120GBx2 HDD.

and created a logical drive or MAP the drive in Windows

2 PHYSICAL DISKS: 120GB SATA SSD

What are you looking "4 (F:\ drive) " that is not possible?

You have to expand the RAID first.

You have purchased 2 new disks with 200GB SATA SSD

If you replaced the disk one by one then raid will accept only 120GB space out of 200 GB space.

For you a good option is

Delete and recreate the RAID with the new 200 GB hard drives.

NOTE: You should have the complete data backup before delete and recreating RAID 1.

Re: INCREASE RAID 1 on Server - Blade - HP - WS460c Gen9

thank you a lot

but when all new larger disk will be replaced, on per time, and parity pocess will be completed

can I hot extend the logical drive directly from smart array utility ?

with you option:"delete and recreate the RAID with the new 200 GB hard drives."

in this way I will lose for sure all logical drive configurations(1,2,3,4) and all data(so I have to reistall operanting system) since C drive(logical drive 1) and it is on the same physical disks

thank you

Re: INCREASE RAID 1 on Server - Blade - HP - WS460c Gen9

Hello,

As per your first POST, your server is running RAID 1 with the 120GBx2 HDD.

Now you want to use 200GB SATA SSD.

Yes, if you remove both the hard disk from the RAID 1, you can lose your data.

I would suggest you read my post properly.

of course, you have to install OS again if you delete and recreate raid.

NOTE: You should have the complete data backup before delete and recreating RAID.
