IP Adapter Conflict

I have received the following message on my proliant 370 server when I changed a NIC I thought was failing:

"The ip address you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter. The NIC is hiddenfrom the Network and Dial-up Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a legacy adapter that is not working."

How do I find the hidden NIC

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

Linda:

One method you can use is to boot up into safe mode. In Safe Mode, all devices that are potentially available on your system are displayedi nthe device manager (devices that have previously been installed, but have since be disabled and/or removed improperly).

From there, you should be able to get rid of the "hidden" entries.

Reboot and you should be ok.

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

Steven,

Thank you for the prompt reply. How do you boot into safe mode on a server?

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

usually the same way as on a desktop.

Reboot.. and when you see the boot loader (on Windows 2000, the bar at the bottom of the screen) or just beore the Windows Server 2003 Splash screen pops up, press f8 for the menu.

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

Will I be able to remove the hidden NIC? This is driving us crazy.

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

In device manager, you can select "View - Show hidden devices"

Re: IP Adapter Conflict

Thanks for your help. I finally went through the command prompt and got rid of it.

Good to know there's another way.
