Increasing Disk Capacity in Proliant DL380.

Hi Folks,

I have a ProLiant DL380 which has two partitions with 2 X 18GB + 3 X 36GB drives. 18GB disks are in RAID 1 and 36 GB disks are in RAID 5.I have one empty internal hard drive slot ,slot # 5. I would like to increase the capacity of 3 X 36 GB disk partition, Could any one tell me what maximum capacity disk I can purchase to be included in the 3 X 36GB drive partition ( ie into slot 5 ). Please let me know what commands I have to run in the Array Utility to add this extra drive.

Thank You,
- Abhijit.

Re: Increasing Disk Capacity in Proliant DL380.

Hi V.S.Abhijith.

Please find the details as given below.

Site Details.

hp proliant DL380-SERVER

RAID1:2 X 18GB
RAID5:3 X 36GB

Process of Migrate

There is 2-option.

step1: if you need upgrade 18 GB in to RAID1, It├в s convert to RAID5 (18GB X 3NO'S).

step2: if you need upgrade 36 GB, it├в s migrate to RAID5 (36GB X 4NO'S).

*the above process, could not be disturbs your existing RAID.

Note: lower RPM Environments can able supported higher RPM HDD.

If you want more space and no need to stripe set go to RAID0.

Its maximum support single hdd 146gb 15k rpm
Like RAID0 (146GB X 1)

Hi,

What you can buy :
Hard Drives Wide Ultra3 SCSI ├в Universal Hot Plug
72.8-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Drive (1") 232432-B22

36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Drive (1") 176496-B22

18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Drive (1├В┬▓ ) 142673-B22

36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 15,000 rpm Drive (1├В┬▓ ) 232916-B22

18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 15,000 rpm Drive (1├В┬▓ ) 188122-B22

Wide Ultra3 SCSI ├в Non-Hot Plug
36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Drive (1") 176497-B21

18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Drive (1├В┬▓ ) 142674-B21

Second
Easy way is replace one low capacity drive with higher capacity let it rebuild then . Then same with other low capacity drive.

So new array will be have free space

other take backup
then instal now hdd then restore backup

or else.
is slot free add hdd
then extention of space.
utility used ACU

FYI
Quickspecs

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10495_div/10495_div.HTML

Where as higher capacity is also possible as siggested by Shiv.
But tested from HP are the above list of HDDs.

Re: Increasing Disk Capacity in Proliant DL380.

Hi ,

Thanks for your replies.

Could you please clarify

1) In RAID 5 , can I increase Disk Drive Numbers ( Assume all are of same capacity ,same RPM , And intial Configuration has 3 Drives in RAID 5 ) from 3 to 4 or Should it be in multiple of 3.

2) Does the internal slots in Proliant DL380 are pre assigned for any RAID configuration , Can I use Slot 5 with out making part of RAID configuration .( A seperate partition ).

Re: Increasing Disk Capacity in Proliant DL380.

Hi,

In answer to your questions:-

1) In RAID 5 , can I increase Disk Drive Numbers ( Assume all are of same capacity ,same RPM , And intial Configuration has 3 Drives in RAID 5 ) from 3 to 4 or Should it be in multiple of 3.

Yes-Add another 36Gb drive to increase the volume. Adding a larger drive to the same logical drive will force the drive to act like a 36Gb drive. All members of the Raid5 set should be the same capacity.
Since I assume you operating system is on the 18Gb mirror, it might be easier to take a full backup of the Raid 5, delete it, add the new 36Gb drive and then recreate a new raid 5 with 4 members. This may be quicker and safer than trying to expand an existing array.

2) Does the internal slots in Proliant DL380 are pre assigned for any RAID configuration , Can I use Slot 5 with out making part of RAID configuration .( A seperate partition ).

No -Slot 5 is independant of any raid configuration. You could add a single drive and create a new volume but you would have no redundancy. If it failed, everything on it would be lost.
Slot 5 is sometimes used for a hot-plug tape drive so it can't be tied to any raid configuration.

I hope this helps.

Re: Increasing Disk Capacity in Proliant DL380.

Hi Abhijit

It is recommended to add 36 Gb drive of same speed specs as the existing one. Higher capacity drive will utislize only 36Gb space. After inserting the drive run Array Control utility to inlcude the drive and expand RAID 5 array.
