Installation problem on Compaq Proliant 6400R

Hi all,

I have a problem when I install windows 2000 server on my Compaq Proliant 6400R with smart array 4200 controller.

It happened when the setup process copied files from cd to harddisk.

At some point (around 72% copying progress) the setup couldn't find a file from CD . I am sure that the windows 2000 setup CD is oke because when I restart the installation process again from beginning, the setup will give me the same error but this time at another point (80% of copying progress).

And if I restart the installation process again, it will stuck at another point (74%).

FYI, I don't use compaq SmartStart CD for installation.
Does anyone ever had the same problem?
Do I need a SmartStart CD in order to install OS on compaq server?

Thanks much.

Re: Installation problem on Compaq Proliant 6400R

Hello Buddy,
It's not necessary to set up the server with Smart Start CD. On the contrary if you intend to set up raid then definitely you would need smart start CD. With the installation issue from W2K server you have stated, my question would be is this a burnt copy or an original one?? The best way to proceed would be to update the system bios n stuff. Then run system erase, swapp the first disk around. Use the system configuration disks from the following link and you would be prompted for the OS cd. This is assuming that you dont want to set up RAID. If you do need to set up RAID then order Smart Start 5.50 by calling 1-800-573-1099 and make sure you specify Smart Start 5.50. Unfortunately, this CD is not downloadable.

Please let me know as to how you make out.

Re: Installation problem on Compaq Proliant 6400R

There was an issue with certain TEAC branded CD-ROM drives in some servers, including the 6400R model which uses a slimline CD.

Here is an extract from the Customer Advisory and the resolution. Please check your drive and apply the firmware fix only if this applies (i.e. TEAC and firmware 9.0B)

Any Compaq server configured with a 700 MHz (or greater) processor and a Compaq model CD-224E CD-ROM may experience the following problems while reading files from the CD-ROM drive:
The CD-ROM drive may stop responding and become inaccessible.

The CD may be ejected from the CD-ROM drive during the file copy operation.

The system may prompt to re-insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.

To identify the Compaq CD-224E CD-ROM , perform one of the following:

The recommended method for identifying the Compaq CD-224E CD-ROM is to run the Compaq Survey Utility for NetWare or the Compaq Survey Utility for Windows, depending on the operating system being used. The CD-224 information will appear similar to the following:

Disk Controller 2 ..................... Miniport Device
Device 0 .......................... COMPAQ CD-224E
Logical Unit ID 0 ................COMPAQ CD-224-E
Device Type ..................... CD Rom
Firmware Version ................9.0B

To correct the problem, upgrade the firmware for the Compaq model CD-224E CD-ROM to version 9.0C (or later).
The firmware upgrade for the Compaq model CD-224E CD-ROM Drive Version 9.0C is available as SoftPaq SP16293 and is available at the following URL:

Hope this helps,
