Installing Small Business Server 2003 on Proliant ML150G3

I'm trying to install SBS2003 on this new server. I've applied the latest Rompaq upgrade. I've also downloaded the SATA drivers - HP ProLiant Smart Array SAS/SATA Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003/2008 Version 6.12.4.32

When I boot with the SBS2003 CD Windows setup prompts for me to press F6, which I do, the diskette gets read and the driver is found (Windows Driver for Smart Array SAS/SATA Controllers )and I then select it and setup continues loading files, Setup then tries to start Windows, accesses the diskette drive and goes to the Welcome to Setup screen. When I press enter to start setup I get a "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" and thats it. The diskette drive is a USB connected one as the server doesn't have a built in diskette drive. Do I need some other additional drivers as well? Has anyone else had and sloved this problem?

Thanks

I think you have not downloaded the proper driver. This driver 'HP ProLiant Smart Array SAS/SATA Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003/2008 Version 6.12.4.32
' is only for SmartArray Controllers. ML150 G3 has no SmartArray unless you have installed it in addition.

Get this one for HP Internal 4 Port SAS HBA with RAID, HP 8 Internal Port SAS/SATA HBA with RAID and HP SCxxGe HBA series:

Hi Tony,

I could understand your situation.
We also case across similar issues with these 100 series servers.

We were using Non HP USB floppy drive for installing the OS.
These hp guys have design these servers to load the OS using their own floppy drive.

We purchased the floppy drive mentioned in the quickspecs of the server & it worked fine.

As we need to install many servers so instead of using floppy, We made an Windows installation image with storage controller drivers.

We used a utility named "NLite" to integrate the drivers with Windows Bootable CD.

You can use this solution too.
It's free.

Re: Installing Small Business Server 2003 on Proliant ML150G3

Hi,

I have tried the suggestions so far and used Nlite to create the CD image which includes the additional drivers and created a new CD. When this boots and launches setup I can see the additional drivers being loaded from the status line messages but the setup still fails with the no hard drives found message.

Re: Installing Small Business Server 2003 on Proliant ML150G3

hi tony

unless you are using an smart array or an HBA PCI card the drivers you used and the links someone posted are fine

but usually that server has the embedded SATA raid controller which I would like if you can verify if so the driver to use is this one none the one above

I linked w2003 x32

try and let us know(use nlite)

Re: Installing Small Business Server 2003 on Proliant ML150G3

Hi Karlo,

I was already using an older version of this adaptec driver from the support CD that came with the server. I've now just tried just adding this new driver alone to the base SBS package in NLite and making an image from that but I still get the "did not find any hard disks" screen.

The server's Insight Diagnostics tell me the drives are there and they test ok.

I've also tried downloading and using the latest version of Smartstart but when it runs it just tells me it can't be used with this model of server.

Should I need any additional drivers other than this HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller for these drives to be seen by Windows SBS setup?

Could I just create some basic boot disk/CD to set the drives up at the DOS level and then run the SBS setup and let it find them that way? I want to run them as a mirror pair for the server.

This is most frustrating :-)

mmm welcome to this world... getting these boxes up and running

follow this procedure since you already install you OS it can help you out

HP ProLiant Servers - How to Install OS on Embedded Sata Raid Controller with Out Floppy Drive or Slipstreaming OS CD
ISSUE:

Most of the 100 series and 300 series servers does not go with the floppy drives and customer not able to install OS as he is not able to inject/supply Raid controller Driver. Customer has to use a Floppy Drive or a Slipstreaming OS CD.
SOLUTION:

Follow the steps below and there is no need to use Floppy Drive or a Slipstreaming OS CD:

1.
Install the OS with Embedded SATA RAID Disabled (No Drivers or F6 required) on one Harddrive.

2.
Once OS is installed, Extract the Embedded SATA RAID Drivers to a folder. HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003:

Click here to go to HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003 .

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1163831&prodNameId=3279687&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-9553913a25fe499aa09e22cfe2

3.
Go to Control Panel-> Add New Hardware->Device is connected->New Hardware->Raid Controller->Have Disk->Browse to the folder where the Embedded SATA RAID Drivers were extracted. Select the .inf file->Install Adaptec Raid Driver.
4.
Restart the Server go to BIOS enable the Embedded SATA RAID.

5.
Press F8 and go to Sata Raid BIOS->Configure the Drives->Create Array->Raid 0/1 A warning message will appear "Warning: Configuring the drives will erase all Array information from the selected drives, if that drive is part of an array. Arrays using any of these drives as members will be affected! Do you want to continue?(Yes/No):". Press "Y" to continue.

6.
If Raid 1 is selected it will ask you what is the Source Disk, select the Right Disk in which OS was installed previously. Warning message might appear again. Select "Y".

7.
Rebuild will take sometime, once rebuild is complete restart the server.

Once rebooted Raid would be detected and windows would boot up, in windows it would detect new hardware and Adaptec Raid drivers will be installed. Now Server is built migrated to Raid Successfully.
