Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

Hi, I am trying to install Suse Linux Enterprise 9 SP3 onto a ML110 G4 with Sata RAID1 disks.
I enabled RAID in the BIOS and setup the RAID1 set.
I start the linux install and installed the HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver Diskette for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (x86).

However, the installation does not recognise the RAID1 set and sees 2 separate disks - so we continue to install on one of them (but this is not what we want - we need RAID1).

We chose SLES9 because HP certify it on an ML110 G4, but we are having all sorts of problems as when it reboots on the install we get "GRUB hard disk error"

Has anyone installed SLES9 on an ML110 G4 with SATA disks in a RAID1 set ?

Can anyone give any pointers ?

Re: Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

hi there,

Are you sure about the raid configured by you that is working and is raid 1
if yes then
I would suggest you try out this version of driver.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/25038.html

else
go for the adapter driver from vendor site not from hp then try it might work with that.

Re: Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

Thanks Prasant.
We have that driver. The problem is that while we have the disks configured as RAID1 we cannot get far enough throuhg the installation to install the driver.

What we tried to do was to break the RAID set, install on one physical disk, install the driver and then configure RAID1 - but we cannot state what the master disk is so all data is blown away when the disks are RAIDed.

Re: Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

Found a few entries on the Novell suport site.
It appears to me that hardware RAID will not work on the ML110 with SATA disks.
See examples here
http://forums.novell.com/group/novell.support.sles.install-boot/readerNoFrame.tpt/@thread@615@F@10@D-,D@/@article@605

and

Can someone from HP please confirm that hardware RAID will not work ??
We are now using software RAID

Try to upgrade the firmware and use the drivers on that site:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/1110_6309.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Also configure the raid with array configuration utility for linux

Re: Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

It talks about the rebuilding prority refix in comon terms.
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/revision/9340.html

But here we are looking at 2 disks while installing the OS on the server.
So i think either we have bad raid or bad driver.

I am confused, but i faced same kind of issue with redhat once on sas controller with hp driver.

let see how the controller firmware go.

Re: Installing Suse Linux Ent. 9 on ML110 G4 with SATA disks in RAID1 set

Installed the latest firmware - still no luck.
I the end we had time constraints and ended up using software RAID1 under the Suse Linux operating system.

However, we have more ML110's to build and we really would like to have hardware RAID, so I would be very interested if anyone has got harwdare RAID to work on a ML110 with Suse Linux Enterpise 9 edition.

yomper,

as u wrote:

At least i think u should load the driver before installing the OS (SLES10 u have the option to press F5 to load a external driver from disk/cd)
