Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

I installed a brand new ML150 G6 yesterday and after I got SBS 2003 sp2 set up and got all the updates installed I rebooted to a black screen hang after the "Starting Windows Server 2003" splash screen. The server would boot in to safe mode fine but would black screen every time I attempted a normal boot. After I reinstalled Windows and restored my backup (thankfully I made a backup right after I configured Active Directory) I was back in business. I am just scared silly now because I have no idea what caused this hang. Event Viewer showed no symptoms. I uninstalled all the Windows Updates from the server through Safe Mode and that did nothing to resolve the issue. I called HP and they said the server was fine and that I need to contact MS except we all know how expensive that is. I also ran a systems diagnostic using the HP Boot Helper CD that came with the server and found nothing (I ran it automated 500 cycles). I am hoping someone out there has some ideas. The server is running HP Branded SBS 2003 sp2 installed with the Boot Helper CD. It's a Quad Core Xeon w/4 GB of RAM and B110i RAID (fw Ver 1.0) controller running RAID 1.

I, too, have had issues with SBS 2003 but in my case after I installed it and rebooted...no mouse and no keyboard.

If you can boot into safemode try to uninstall the Lights Out and Graphics driver then try to boot in, this is just to see if the hangs are caused by this drivers.

Was there any resolution to this issue? I have the same issue on the ML150 G6 after installing Server std 2003 R2.

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

I noticed that some people were able to boot when uninstalling VGA drivers from safemode, others were able to boot when disabling secondary port on the array controller from the BIOS.
I would like to know the systembaord revision that you are using as it does not happen on all ML150 G6 servers only on a small number of them.

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

My guess is that it is a Windows Update causing this issue. I have disabled Windows Updates and the server has been running fine.

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

Fantastic, thanks for the quick reply!

I am working through my co-worker in Hollywood... I asked him to d/l the 18 Aug BIOS before we started so he is doing that. Next he will disable the second port on the RAID as we were already in BIOS looking for that VGA driver.

Come to think of it, he did mention he had done all the updates and then it stopped working, if that is the case do we have any idea what MS update killed it? I will check it out one at a time and let you know the MoBo version.

Thanks,
Cam

Jeremy would it be possible that you get the revision of systemboard that you have, im trying to collect some info on this to isolate it from being a hardware problem.

That's not a problem. Would that info be printed on the mobo?

Oh, I should add that HP Support had nothing for him on this issue... same thing that happened to me on my last thread even though it was an obviously known issue. :(

Yes indeed, you should be looking for a sticker on the system board that has a CT number of arround 14 digits it is located in between PROC2 slot and memory banks for PROC2.

The number looks kind like this:

CT:PANKT0727VU050

Keep in mind that disabling the secondary array port on the server will disable the CD-ROM also since its connected to sata ports 5 or 6 on the system board and those belong to that secondary port, the reason behind disabling this is to see if its IRQ and/or BIOS related problem...

Mine is:

CT: PANKTA127W90VJ

BTW, the BIOS didn't do it.. long chance anyway.

My co-worker said the failure after the spash happened the first time before any Microsoft updates were applied.

Continuing with recomendations..

Brokenjeep,

Have you opened a case with HP on this issue?
If so what is your case number?

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

Ok.. no dice on the 2nd port and killing the VGA driver in safe mode had no effect. He has downloaded a new version of the smartstart, and although it was corrupt yesterday and wouldn't boot he is going to try the new download again today. Otherwise he is going to try HP once more. I told him to give up and try to use this to justify 2008 :)

Smart Start wont work for the 100 server series its only for 300 series and up.
The easy set up CD thats on the website is for use with the ML150 G6.
there are two versions available. V1.0 deployment doesn't avoid having the hang on splash screen issue.
v2.0 on the other hand has not been tried as the image that's on the website is corrupt and not bootable.

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

Guys,

If you have this problem let me know if you have opened any cases and the case numbers, also aside from the CT number on the motherboard i need to get a REV number that is on a sticker next to the CT sticker, you should look for the part number and next to that part number you should see the two digit REV number so i need to have both CT and REV numbers.

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

For anyone interested, I have just had the same problem with Windows 2003 Std 32bit on an ML150G6.
I downloaded & ran the new Easy Boot CD, also did the BIOS update suggested with the same problem.
To fix my problem, some drivers for iLO etc were released yesterday (14th September) that solved my issue.
Updated all firmware & drivers available from the following link;

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=au&prodNameId=3884324&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3884323&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1005

My case number was 4603543529.

Cheers,
Matt.

Re: Issues with new ML150 G6 and SBS 2003 R2

I am having the same issue..

Case # 4604193803

Upgraded all firmware and drivers..
removed video..

Server ran all day while I was loading with several reboots. Now it does nothing but go to black screen after a minute or so on the splash screen.

Will boot in safe mode..

The last tech I spoke with wants me to RELOAD AGAIN and NOT use the smart start CD..
