Junior Admin needs Help array 5300 status message

I just replaced a hard drive on my ML530 G2 with a smart array 5300 controller in slot 1.

Now I am receiving an informational status message which I need more information on to clear.
"Backgroud parity initialiation is currenly queued or in prgress on logical drive 1(Raid 5 in array A). If backgroud parity initializatron is queued, it will start when I/O is performed on the drive. When backgroud parity initialization completes, the performance of hte logical drive will improve."

I am not sure what to do to improve the performance. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Hi

These messages show up when new devices are added to the system. Once the initialization is complete then should be normal.

Really depend how big drives, and how busy server, it's a background process it might stay normally there for several day's in some cases it possibly one week or more (rarely to be happened and might indicate some problems on the SCSI chain).

Hi Jason,

You can try to make parity initialisation process faster by configuring "rebuild priority" from low to high on SA card. By default, it is low, On this configuration, more priority is given to system bootup and OS performance than rebuilding of parity on newly installed HDD.

Hi,

Move data to and from the logical drive to speed things up, even if its only a few Gb.

This kind of delay is normal with devices like the MSA1000 and writing data to the logical drive really improves the time it takes to sort itself out.

I hope this helps.
