Latest BIOS for ML115 G5...?

Sorry - another 'newb' query. My freshly unpacked ML115 G5 has BIOS v. 018. How can I find out whether this is the latest BIOS and, if it's not, how do I update it?

I would only patch this server if you actually need to for a problem. Do a search - numerous reports of flash failures resulting in motherboard replacement being required, I've had one myself.

That is where you download new bios updates.
You can see what version you have installed by looking at the date next to the BIOS version.

2009.07.06 (29 Jul 2009) seems to be the latest.

And yes, there's always a risk with the firmware upgrade :/

So, if its a quite recent BIOS is it worth doing considering the risk?

Depends on what were added in the latest BIOS.

From what I can see in the revision history in the link above, the only addition is support for Windows 2008 R2 and a graphical change after resetting default on the BIOS.

If you're not going to use Windows 2008 R2 it seems like updating to the latest is not necessary.
