Linux and ProLiant 1600

Hi !

sorry for my bad english.. i'm german.

I got a Compaq ProLiant 1600 Server (P3 550mhz 128mb). My aiming is to use it for some server tasks with linux.

1. There wasn't a hdd built in, so i installed a new one. And so i tryed and tryed to enter the bios, until i recognized that anything is wrong.

It's like that:
--
Prozessor initialized at 500mhz with 512 Kbyte Cache
"162-System Options not set" [two beeps]
Scsi detection..
"163-Time&Date not set" [two beeps]

"Run System Configuration Utility"
"Press F10 for System partition Utilities"
I press it.. [two beeps]
"The System Partition Utility is not available on this system"

Press any key to continue
--
so i download many diskettes for flashing the bios.. syccesfully..but i cant enter the bios.

now i know that i need this partition, but i don't how i can create it!

Re: Linux and ProLiant 1600

2. Trying to install Linux
2.1. RedHat 6.2:
The installation completes. i can run the os without any problem.
But rh 6.2 is not really that want running on it!
2.2 Knoppix 3.1 life cd (no hdd installation, just booting from cd):
If i just load the knoppix kernel without any parameters, The Server freezes on that point:
"Autoconfiguring devices... * "
If i set the parameter "nousb", it works!
2.3. Gentoo 2004.1:
With Gentoo it freezes at the same time, like knoppix! but if i set "nousb" nothing changes!!
it's frozen too!
2.4 SuSE 9.0:
suse installation starts.. he asks for for detection of usb and firwire components. if i say "yes" It's frozen!! if i say "no", the installation runs..
Ok, suse is installed.
If i want just booting linux.. it freezes at this point:
"starting hotplugging services [ieee1394 net pci usb] FAILED"

so i tried it with bootparameters "nousb" and "nohotplug" without a difference..

So thats my history with that server..
i'm sorry if anyone started the same topic, but i hadn't found a search option.

Matthias:
To create a new system partition, download the following links and create the diskettes:

Here is a link to the update disketts for the F10 partition: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/download/303.html

or the diagnostics diskettes from here:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/download/9260.html
Enjoy!

Re: Linux and ProLiant 1600

Opps: Ignore the links above! I coppied the wrong ones:

Please use the System Configuration Utility: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html

You will need 4 diskettes to build it.

Sorry for the above post.
Enjoy!

Re: Linux and ProLiant 1600

Yes..

in this document, we can see, that redhat 6.2 is the only one.

rh 6.2 works correctly! but i dont think that its normal, that the newer distributions freeze!?
