Re: Looking for a DNS server

You will want to have some idea of how many queries per second your server will be getting - goes to CPU horsepower, and also how large a domain you expect to serve - goes to memory capacity.

Likely as not, one of the 1U servers would probably suffice.

Re: Looking for a DNS server

Just basic A queries I presume? Handwaving a bit (perhaps considerably) from DNS server software changing non-trivially since ca 2000, and autoritative vs caching server etc, based on data such as that in:

ftp://ftp.cup.hp.com/dist/networking/briefs/dns_server_results.txt

and confidently asserting that a current ProLiant G6 system has greater "oomph" than the systems in the writeup :), I would say you would be fine with almost any CPU config of a G6. Of course, this advice is free and worth every penny :)
