Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi, Janis.

Try to test it with a different monitor and to run a ROM recovery.

Re: ML 530 no video output

After I removed and reinserted some DIMM's server started to run.

Now there's another problem. Seems, I'm too dumb.
I can't find out how to configure logical drives to install OS on.
Controller is Smart Array 5300.

Also tried to use onboard controller, but ended up with no success. I cannot find, where can I set SCSI and RAID settings.

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi Janis.

From RBSU, make sure the SA5300 is the boot controller, then, boot using SmartStart and run ACU (Array Configuration Utilities)

1) wtf is RBSU? How can I get to it? There are not any messages at startup present asking me to press a key (f1,del, ctrl-a.. whatever) so I haven't got any idea asking Please note, that probably I don't have all the CD's/flopies, so if possibble please advice me where to download them!

2) Which smartstart to run? When I tried to run ACU from latest smartstart, it didn't find any supported controllers.

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hello again

Here is the Proliant Support Pack 7.50A (PSP), this is to be installed after the OS.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23301.html

The SmartStart CD 7.40
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23318.html

Here is a SmartStart user guide (PDF).
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00372139/c00372139.pdf

And here are your SA 5300 drivers and istallation instructions.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23379.html

If that is the SmartStart that you are using, then perform a normal windows instal without SmartStart, follow the SA5300 drivers installation instructions.

Let me know if it help you or any other doubt

I'm still in doubt. How can I install OS if there are no hard drives configured. I have 5 hard drives. I want all of them to be connected to Smart Array 5300. I want them all to be bonfigured as one drive. I don't have any other hard drives so I want to do all drive things before OS, but how???
Hot to tell system to boot from SA5300?

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi,

RBSU = ROM based setup utilty. But if your server is an older model, it won't have RBSU (if the server is beige-coloured). I am not sure if newer firmware for the Smart Array Controller enables you to configure the array from the Controller's BIOS using F8. (do you get an F8-prompt during POST from the Smart Array controller?) If not, you would probably need to boot from SmartStart CD 5.50 so you can use the Array Configuration Utility. Then when the array is defined, and the SA5300 is set as the primary boot controller, you should be able to install your OS.

You can download SmartStart 5.50 here:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22678.html

Re: ML 530 no video output

Now I boot up with Smart start 5.50
Run system configuration utility
And when I'm trying to sort out where's the Smart Array board is, I find that it is identifeid just as PCI board, category "Other Board"

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi,

Darn. Maybe the version of SCU on SS 5.50 is not new enough to recognise the SA5300.
Can you run Array Configuration Utilty from SmartStart?

You can get the latest version of SCU here:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html

Versions 2.53A and later should have support for the SA5300, according to the revision history. You would need to create 4 floppies and boot from the first one. Then it should be possible to set the SA5300 as your boot controller.

I have SCU 2.58, but it still says that its PCI card.

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi, Janis and Stephen

Your server has a BIOS, because there is a BIOS ROM PACK available for your server at:

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/69_1117.html

Your server has RBSU just because every computer, PC or server must have a BIOS setup utillity, in this case called ROM based setup utillity.

And here is the RBSU user guide. Go to page 91 and read. How to configure an array starting with a powered down server...

http://docs.hp.com/en/306105-005/306105-005.pdf

And, if you want to visit my previous links and read a little, you'll find instructions on how to use the products and also to what server models the product applies to or support.

If when you click the links you get into a "cannot display window page", erase the "
" on the address bar, I don't know why is that string doing there.

:)

PD.. Use SS 7.40 and PSP 7.50A as I-ve told you, read the instructions and supported servers...

Re: ML 530 no video output

Hi Chongkan,

yes, all servers have a BIOS, but not all ProLiants have a BIOS setup utility via an F9 prompt. Older Proliants had NO RBSU! This was the case up until the first G2 servers came out. To configure BIOS settings for these older machines you needed System Configuration Utilty, which you either ran from SmartStart, from floppies, or installed it to the hard disk so you could access it via F10 on boot-up (installed using SmartStart). But installing to the Hard Disk is currently not an option, as there are no arrays or logical drives configured. And we are stuck there at the moment.

Now I'm not 100% sure whether Janis' server has an RBSU. If there is no F9 prompt, and pressing F9 after POST does not do anything then it does not have one. And if this is the case, then using SmartStart 7.40 is also a waste of time, as it will say that the server is unsupported!

However, I think the Smart Array 5300 has it's own Online ROM Configuration Application (ORCA), which could be accessed by pressing F8 after the array controller prompt during POST. Here you could also set the controller as the boot controller. But I can't be sure, as I don't have one in front of me.

Janis, if you boot from SS 5.50, is there an option to launch Array Configuration Utility? I can't say if a firmware upgrade on the SA5300 would help, but if you want to try, download the Firmware Maintenance CD and boot from it.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23331.html

If all else fails, get the system erase floppy
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17918.html

and erase the machine completely (clears CMOS, wipes Array config). Then start again from scratch. (I'm running out of ideas!)

Stephen

Re: ML 530 no video output

I've done all the steps you said. At startup I can't see that Smart Array. Also in ROM maintenance utility I can't see it so i can't upgrade firmware to it.
Server is ML530. Bios version number shows P19. Also in configuration utility at appears only as a PCI card.
Probably controller has a damage and I've just sent it back to retailer. I hope, he will be able to tell what's wrong with it.
