ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

Hi,
the fan of my new ML110 G5 (with E2160 CPU) go permanently at full speed!

Someone has a solution?

Thanx,

Have you installed the Proliant Support Pack? - There is a health driver in there that regulates the fan speed.
Upgraded BIOS firmware?
Maybe you can change the speed in BIOS?

Re: ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

Hello Johan,
last year I have installed another ML110 G5 (with another CPU): the fan go at full speed only in the first minutes of boot and after slow down.

- The server has already installed the last bios version: 2010.10.25.

- I haven't installed the Proliant Support Pack.

I download now and try the health driver:
I hope this is the solution.

Thanx,
Pasq

Hi Pasquale Pellicano,

There isn't any Proliant Support Pack for 100 series servers. So you can't install PSP.

About the Fan speed:

Fan speed at POST is controlled by health management driver which is integrated with system bios and ILO and in OS it is controlled by system management driver.

Fan noice issue was addressed in BIOS version 2009.02.24 (13 Mar 2009) but you already have latest bios.

So what you need to do fix the problem is to install these two updates to take care of this issue.:

1.
HP ProLiant 100 Series Servers Null Management INF Installer Smart Component for Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008
File name: cp008464.exe (482 KB)

2.
Firmware Upgrade for HP ProLiant ML110 G5 Lights-Out 100 Remote Management (For USB Key-Media)
Version: 3.20 (B) (22 Jun 2010)
File name: SP49103.exe (4.6 MB)

Related Fixes : Resolved a security issue where a malformed packet could cause the BMC to reset and the system fans to go to maximum speed.

Hope this helps,

thanks
Aftab

Re: ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

Hello Aflab,
one question: is the ILO present in every ML110 G5?
Sorry I don't have much experience with server...

Thanx

Re: ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

ah, always that thing about the 100-series as well :)

Pasquale: here is the quickspecs for the ML110 G5 : http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12867_na/12867_na.HTML

On there is a
4. HP ProLiant 100 G5 Lights-Out 100c Management Card Port (Optional)

So the ML110 G5 you have, may have that.

Drivers and iLO firmware you can find here:

Re: ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

Hi Pasq,

thanks for your quick response.

That's a valid question. I overlooked this info..

as per quickspecs, it is optional.
Management:
Optional HP ProLiant 100 G5 Lights-Out 100c Remote Management Card
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12901_div/12901_div.HTML

So, you need to check during POST whether you have ILO.. if yes then consider updating it's firmware.

Thanks,
Aftab

Re: ML110 G5 CPU E2160: fan permanently full speed

or maybe more easier than looking in the post you can see the iLO device (maybe unknown, no driver device) in the device manager or by looking at the back of the server if you have an extra pci-card with an ethernet port.
