ML110 G6 locks up running a tape backup

I have an ML110 G6 running Windows Server 2003 that locks up a couple times a week and it's always when running a tape backup. It does it using Backup Exec or with Windows backup. The tape drive is an HP DAT 320 internal USB. Nothing is written in the event logs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You could run some diagnostics on the tape drive with HP's LTT - Library and Tape Tools.

Is it possible to plug the drive in another USB port?

I was able to switch the tape drive to a different port but that didn't stop the lockups. Not all of the lockups happen during a tape backup but 80% or better are during backups. I will try running the tape diagnostics.

Tape tools did not indicate a problem but I did find something interesting. I tried to back up the server to a USB flash drive and the server locked up. It appears to be a USB issue and not a problem with the tape drive. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Well, how about:

perhaps it's your backup software? - patches etc?

do you have the possibility to try another backup software?

Doesn't windows 2003 have a very simple backup software built-in?

perhaps it's drivers? - update os?
