ML110 Gen 9 - why two motherboards? Why? One for E5 v3, and one for E5 v4?

Hopefully someone knows these machines well enough by now to know the answer to this:

The HP site says that ML110 G9 servers came with two types of main boards that support 'E5 EP CPUs':

791704-001 (For Haswell CPUs)
846956-001 (For Broadwell CPUs)

As usual, HP advice is to pick an OE CPU with an HP part number.  This means limiting choice to about 10% of the CPUs Intel has produced for these architectures.

My system, (part 776935-B21), has a 791704-001 board.  The HP parts list states this is for Haswell EP CPUs (v3), and lists a different board with another part number supports Broadwell CPUs (v4):

As ML110 Gen 9 was sold as supporting Intel Haswell EP CPUs, I am hoping I can upgrade it with a better CPU than HP supplied back then.  Perhaps a E5-2683 v3, but ideally an E5-2683 v4 (Broadwell).  Given that most systems using X99/C6xx chipsets were also designed for Haswell but also supported Broadwell, it seems very likely all ML110G9s should do it too, but given that there were two boards in the G9, it seems that HP may have introduced be some limitation.

Can anyone help me find out:

1. If the 791704-001 board support any v4 (Broadwell) CPUs?  HP documentation says the server model does support v4, and does not metion any board or part-specific limitations for anyone chnaging CPUs.
2. Were systems supplied with the 846956-001 main board, only supplied with v4 CPUs?

Note: HP advanced parts listings do not list the 846956-001 as a 'Functional Equivalent', so not necessarily a replacement.  Maybe it had dual processor slots or some other difference?  Only HP knows at present, or so, it appears.

If you know the answer to any of these, or have any other helpful insight, please let me know!

846956-001 board supports both v3 & v4 CPUs

There is also another system board model which supports only v4 processors.

Thank you for the Post.

What we see is the 7 Series System Board supports Haswell Processors only.

791704-001

System I/O board (motherboard) - Supports Intel Xeon E5 26XX v3 (Haswell) processors - Includes base pan assembly, alcohol pad, and thermal grease syringe - Processors must be the same spare part number

Where in the 8 Series System Board supports both Haswell and Broadwell Processors.

846956-001

System I/O board (motherboard) - Supports Intel Xeon 2600 v3 (Haswell) and E5-2600 v4 (Broadwell) processors - Includes base pan assembly, alcohol pad, and thermal grease syringe - Processors must be the same spare part number

The new System Board (846956-001) would be backward compatible with previous Gen Processors, however I am afraid the 7 Series would support the new Gen Processors.
