ML150 G3 RAM problem with matched pair

I've got a brand new ML150 G3 with the December 2006 version of the 007 BIOS installed.

It came with 512MB RAM installed in slot 1 (HP p/n 398705-051).

I bought another 512MB if RAM (same part number) from an on-line e-tailer. It came in a box with an unbroken HP seal.

I installed the new RAM in slot 3. Pressed power on and the system fan runs at 100% and the machine stays in that condition for minutes - until I power down.

I swapped the RAM modules; 3 to 1 and 1 to 3. Same problem.

I took out the original RAM and installed the new RAM in slot 1. Same problem.

I took out the new RAM and re-installed the original RAM in slot 1. Everything works perfectly!

I'm outside the return date to the e-tailer. Does this sound like a RAM module problem and, if it is, what can I do about it?

If it's not a RAM module problem, what are the possible solutions?

Thanks.

What happens when you try each of the single DIMMs in turn ?

Re: ML150 G3 RAM problem with matched pair

OK, call the original (shipped 512MB) RAM, RAM1.

Call the new (part number identical) RAM, RAM2.

RAM1 in slot 1 - system boots.

RAM2 in slot 1 - system fails to boot, fan 100%.

RAM1 in slot 1, RAM2 in slot 3 - system fails to boot, fan 100%.

RAM2 in slot 1, RAM1 in slot 3 - system fails to boot, fan 100%.

RAM1 in slot 1, RAM2 in slot 2 - system boots but doesn't recognise RAM2.

RAM2 in slot 1, RAM1 in slot 2 - system fails to boot, fan 100%.

Does this make sense?

Looks like RAM2 is faulty

If it was OK, the system would boot
