ML150 G5 Sata harddisk customer installable or not

Dear all,

We planning to buy a server which can have 6-8 hard disk installed. We found ML150 suit for this. But we wanted to ask is the non-hotplug sata hard disk is customer installable or must buy from HP for install into server.

Since we work in school and price different is large between HP and Seagate or IBM such brand, we may not affordable for such cost for build our storage server.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

The problem is with the hard drive tray in order to fit the hard drives in the bay, but you can try buying a tray spare part number 373211-001 (HP Compaq 373211-001 SATA / SAS Hard Drive Tray / Caddy). The second issue would be that this hard drives are not supported by HP.

Re: ML150 G5 Sata harddisk customer installable or not

Gary,

Gary,

Thanks for your information. We understand the customer added hard disk without warranty by HP and this is normal and fair.

Since we want to buy non-plug hard disk model with addition 2nd cage, we can add the max. 8 hard disk without tray. But we have not used HP server before, all our servers is Dell. This may be the first time we buy HP server for our school.

Our major concern is do HP ML150 server can detect the customer added hard disk is a "NON Purchase By HP" product , as a result is the sata controller cannot detect the customer added hard disk. Finally, we must required to buy hard disk from HP. We have not such $$ to do that.

If additional hard disk MUST needed to buy from HP, then we must not able to consider use HP ML150 as our server.

Can you help us to solve our concern for us to know the direction we should go?

Many Thanks.

Best Regards,

Re: ML150 G5 Sata harddisk customer installable or not

Hi John,

As a rule, the disk should be a supported part number with supported version of HP firmware.
AFAIK it doesn't matter where/who the drive was purchased from as long as it meets the server's supported disk drive models, which can be found here:

Re: ML150 G5 Sata harddisk customer installable or not

Thanks for your quick update on our message.

May be we change a method try to solve our concern. Does Non-HP Raid controller card can use on HP ML150 G5 PCI or PCIe slot? If HP bios support boot from that Raid controller, then we can solve our problem.

BTW, can u help to update us, SmartArray E200 without raid 5 model one, what is the maximun sata hard disk size can support? Some vendor told us 750GB, but some said 1TB, we found it should be 750GB, right? And, what is max. raid volume size can create per lun in raid 1 or raid 0?

Thanks.

Wonder why these caddies are not sold in UK and they are more than twice costly compared with caddies for Acer machines and 1/10 in quality compared with those sold by Acer.

Acer itself sells them.

As fas as I'm taught deploying a Proliant 100 Series is not an efficient way for that amount of Hard Disks. You should better buy an HP Proliant 500/700 Server Series in order to support a larger number of HDD.
