ML150 G5 Unexpected Power Off (Hardware not OS)

We've got a client who's server is powering off randomly.

I've established its not power - we've changed power outlet and installed a new UPS.

I've checked the hardware event logs and there are heaps of these:

SEL Record Type: 02 (System Event)
Event Message Format Ver: 04 (IPMI ver 1.5/2.0)
Event Sensor Type: 14 (Button)
Event Sensor Number: 3E
Event Dir Type: 03
Event Data: 01 FF FF

Am I correct in thinking we have a faulty power button?

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks
Ben

Re: ML150 G5 Unexpected Power Off (Hardware not OS)

I have replaced the Temperature Sensor cable but the problem still persists. The server is still randomly shutting down, even sometimes randomly starting up again.

I have no idea what is causing this.

What could be next? Power Supply? Motherboard?

For a server that is less than 3 years old, completely unimpressed.

Re: ML150 G5 Unexpected Power Off (Hardware not OS)

I just inherited an HP DL180 G5 and am having the same issue! Random shutdown.

I was logged in the last time and the server sent a message that the power button had been pressed, but it had not.

Remove the power button on the motherboard and than test your server.

Did you get this figured out? We are having the same problem with an ML150 G5 that is only 2 years old. It's twin (purchased at the same time) is doing just fine. Throughout the summer we had several unexplained reboots but over the last few days it just shuts off without turning back on.

Re: ML150 G5 Unexpected Power Off (Hardware not OS)

We opened it up and moved the power button cable around and pulled out the power supplies and re-connected them. Now it is operating fine. We didn't want to unplug the button because there was a number of components to remove like a heat sink and another board to get at the plug, so that was going to be a service call if necessary.

Re: ML150 G5 Unexpected Power Off (Hardware not OS)

It appears that may have worked for us as well. I pulled the power supply cables from the motherboard and the connector that attaches to the power button. I reconnected everything and the server hasn't had a problem for the last 36 hours.
