ML150 G6 + P410 + VMware 5.1.0 Build 799733 Strange RAID Issue

Hi Folks,

Strange Problem I've encountered with the ML150 G6

I've got a ML150 G6 with Vmware 5.1.0 installed

It's got a P410 SA controller which is connected to 2 SAS Hot Plug Drive Cages

RAID Config is LD1 600 GB * 2 Drive 1 and 2 RAID 1 (Cage 1)

(Cage 1 LD2 300GB Disk 3) + (Disk 5,6 and 7 in a RAID 5 config)

The server and the SA has the latest firmware from  HP Service Pack for ProLiant version 2013.02.0

When I install disks into slot 4 and 8, the SA just red lights the disks and ignores them.

I thought they were faulty so bought 2 more and go the same result.

F8 in the ORCA during boot doesn't detect the new disks either.

I've checked the jumpers on the back of the Back plane J13. BP1 is set for the top drive cage and BP2 is set for the bottom one. I've connected the IC2 cables to the mainboard as per upgrade instructions

Otherwise server working without issue...

It's a weird fault, any body any ideas??

Your post is a bit confusing....

Can you confirm that you have 2 x 600GB disks in cage 1, bays 1 and 2

And 3 x 300GB disks in cage 2 bays 5, 6 and 7? (you said cage 1 here...)

Thanks

Mark...

Hi Mark,

Sorry to confuse you.

Cage 1 has 3 disk in. 2 * 600 which are in a Raid 1 set 1

The 3rd disk is a 300 GB  which is in RAID set 2 and joined  by disk 5,6,7 which are also  300GB disks.

Thanks Sean

Re: ML150 G6 + P410 + VMware 5.1.0 Build 799733 Strange RAID Issue

Hmm, I thought it might be a problem seeing any of the disks in cage 2 and was going to ask if you had the second cable attached from the P410 to cage 2, but it can't be that...

Have you tried moving the 300GB disk in cage 1 bay 3 to cage 2 bay 8 to keep RAID set 2 together?

Then try installing the new disks into cage 1 bays 3 and 4.

What are the new disks? model no, part no etc...?

Thanks

Mark...

Re: ML150 G6 + P410 + VMware 5.1.0 Build 799733 Strange RAID Issue

Hi Mark,

Sorry for the slight delay on the reply....;-)

It's not a second cage issue.

I've got Disk 3 (Cage 1) and Disk5,6,7 (Cage 2) in a ESXi datastore. It works fine.

Any new disks you fit to Disk Slot 4 (Cage 1) and Disk Slot 8 (Cage 2). The P410 ignores and red lights the new disks immediatly. It's weird. I've worked as a Compaq ASE and a HP MASE for over 14 years never seen anything like it.

I'm tempted to order two back planes for the cages, but I'm not sure it'll fix it. The P410 is on firmware version 6.00

If you reboot and go into ORCA the SA doesn't see the disks either.....

What do you reckon?

disks installed

are DISK 1 and 2 (Cage 1) (600GB 6G 15K DP) (datastore 1 + esxi)

DISK 3 (Cage 2) and DiSK 4,5,6,7) (300GB 6G 15K DP) (Datastore 2)

Re: ML150 G6 + P410 + VMware 5.1.0 Build 799733 Strange RAID Issue

Hi Sean,

Yes it is a bit perplexing (been a Compaq / HP ASE for 10yrs myself!)

Could be the slots on the backplanes I suppose but to rule this out, I'd try moving your existing disks around to utilize Cage 1 Bay 4 and Cage 2 Bay 8. Then try adding the new disks into the other spare slots available and see if you get the same thing (if you havent tried this already of course!)

Maybe go Raid set 1 in Cage 1 bays 3 and 4, Raid set 2 in Cage 1 Bay 2 and Cage 2 bays 6,7 and 8 leaving the 2 left most bays free?

The Array controller should be intelligent enough to see that they've moved and auto update itself...

Thanks Mark, I'll try it tonight failing that I'll order upa a couple of backplanes.

Don't believe the hype, test it first!
