ML310e Gen8 not booting from USB Key with ESXi installed

Hi,

I am trying to get my new ML310e Gen8 booting from a USB which has VMware ESXi installed on it.

The system booted OK from the CD and found the USB key to install ESXi on, but will not boot from it after installation.

The USB key works in my other machines (a desktop and laptop) and tried another USB key.

I have also tried the back on front USB ports as well as the internal USB port.

Is there a limit on the size of USB keys this server likes? (they are both 4GB)

The BIOS options are set for USB boot enabled.

I have tried the IP, but this only allows me to install ESXi (ver 5.1 Update 1 from the HP ISO image) onto the local hard drive (which I would like to use for a datastore only).

Thanks in advance.

Giles

Hi,

I am doing the same thing -- were you able to get the issue sorted out?

Can you please advise me on how to go about it

Thanks

I had the same problem but was able to get it to boot from USB using this guide: http://ares.gobien.be:8080/2013/06/vmware-esxi-5-1-on-usb-stick-wont-boot-proliant-dl380-g5/

Right after choosing "Start ESXi installer" you press Shift+o and type

runweasel formatwithmbr

This formats the USB stick with MBR instead of GPT.

This works for my ML310e gen8 v2 server too. Thanks for the comment.
