I added a SA642 and a 36.4GB Non Hot Pluggable disk to a new ML330G3 (with 1 cpu, 1x36GB HDD).
Unfortunately during bootup, i saw the following error in POST and wasn't able to press F8 to configure the array.
"1775-Slot3 Proliant Storage Enclosure Not Recognized" plus something about checking power and cable.
My questions are:
1. Do i need to put the SA642 to Slot 1 (which the integrated U3 SCSI adapter is current in)?
2. Do i need to use the jumper switch on the HDD to specify ID 0 & 1?
3. I re-sit all connection but still the error occurs. Why can't i press F8 to go to ACU?
Hope someone out there can help.
Many thanks,
Jon

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
Sorry, I do not personally have such machine, but by the look of the spec for the SA642, it needs a separate SCSI cable (code 273463-B21 SCSI Cable Option Kit).
Is this the cable linking between the SA642 and hard disks (but not other devices)?

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
try the following option
1) Update the Bios with the latest version.
2) Update the firmware of the Smart Controller.
3) Update the SCU.
4) Run an Erase with the SmartStart CD-Rom.
5) If these steps aren't effective, replace smart controller.
6) remove yellow SCSI cable with terminator from port 2 of raid controller
If still having the same problem replace scsi cabling and/or replace drive backplane.

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
Thank you for your very prompt reply. Appreciate your help.
Gus,
Yes, i am using the option cable for the SA642 and its connecting to the 2 HDD only. The integrated U3 SCSI controller is connected to the tape drive.
Prashant,
Will try to run the erase utilty and the firmware upgrade. Hope there is nothing wrong with the SA card.
Anyone else had this problem before? Would love to hear from you.
Rgds,
Jon

Just want to check if the SA642 is brand new, or if it ever had an external StorageWorks enclosures configuration? Does it also have a battery-backup module installed with it?

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
Thank you for your kind assistance.
Yes, the SA642 is new. I think there is a battery backup for it.
Any ideas?

Jon

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
I checked with our Procurement and found that the cable option they order is :
Internal U3 Cable Option (Non Hot Plug) for tape drives (166389 - B21) instead of 273463-B21.
and other parts they ordered are
a. SA642 (291967-B21)
b. 36.4GB NHP Ultra320 SCSI 10K (1") Hard Drive (271832 - B21)
Does these cause any problem?

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
If we try to work out other way around on sa642. Do not connect any device with sa any error information coming. Any error led status on sa with blue or amber colour.
Q) 1. Do i need to put the SA642 to Slot 1 (which the integrated U3 SCSI adapter is current in)?
A) NO
Q) 2. Do i need to use the jumper switch on the HDD to specify ID 0 & 1?
A) This can be done
Q)3. I re-sit all connection but still the error occurs. Why can't i press F8 to go to ACU?
A) Check with only SA installedon server with no connection to any device.

Prashant S.

SolutionIf it is used only for the connection between the tape drive and non-RAID SCSI controller, then I would suspect it will work just fine (partcode 166389-B21 is designed for Ultra3 SCSI connections with terminator, 1.2m long, supports up to four drives, and has been around since Proliant 1600R).
What about the SCSI ribbon that connects between the SA642 and the Ultra320 drives? What is the part code for it? Let us know...
I believe the SCSI ribbon that came with the server would not work with the SA642 controller.

Re: ML330G3 and SmartArray 642 - can't use F8 to config array
Thanks again for the reply.
Actually the option cable: Internal U3 Cable Option (Non Hot Plug) for tape drives (166389 - B21) - is used to connect the SA642 to the U320 HDDs.
Would this be a problem?

Jon
