Maybe it would be worth changing the cable from array controller to drive cage. Or perhaps the hot-plug back-plane is going bad.

Experiencing identical problem.
Have 6 Ultra320 drives. First four drives are showing ultra2-narrow, drive 5 is ultra320, drive 6 is ultra2-wide.
Did you get any update on your problem Aldous?
