ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

I currently have 3 x 300 10k sas disks configured as a RAID 5.
It's running Windows 2008 SBS with also a virtual instance with Windows 2008 Terminal Server.

The server has a 512 mb. cache with battery, but the maximum write speed is at: 70/80 mb/s.
Now this isn't that bad for a RAID 5 config.

But is there a way to add a 4th disc and simply hit an convert to RAID 10 button?

Please advice,
Dennis

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my raid controller is a P410i

I have never seen it done. How much free space is available? You would need more than 1/2 free to convert. I would never do a conversion from 5 to 10. I would do two full backups and restore. Is this your active directory server? Do you have a second one? Is this your DNS server? What else is on it?

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

Yes, that's possible.

insert the new disk.
Open ACU.
Using the wizard:
Add new disk to array.
Using the wizard:
perform a RAID level migration.

I'm not sure if the P410/i require the battery to do this, but since you have the battery, you are able to do the migration.

Do ensure, that you have a good backup.
And that you have got a recovery plan.
Better safe than sorry.

Also:
Before you begin. Check that the running disks is ok.
Best tool to use is the SMH (System Management Home page).
Select the disk system, and check all disks.
The must be error free.

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

Hi guys,

I know it's been a whlie, but the migration have never took place and is planned for the upcoming weekend.
But before I proceed with it I just want to know how you guys create offline backups.
As suggested I would like to make a complete backup of the environment in case of a failure.
In the past I used Norton Ghost, but I'm not sure if that's the right approach.

What do you use for complete offline backups in case of a failure?

Thanks!

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

Hi Dennis

Well.

First of all I have learned, this week, that my answer for you is wrong. Sorry :(

It was claimed by some other folks, that it has not previously been possible to got from RAID 5 to RAID 10,  on the Smart  Array Controller.

It is however on the new P420.

You could try it. and prove them or me wrong (most likely me).

So under all circumstances, you must prepare for a complete rebuild of the server.

Is it possible for you to make a one button disaster recovery imgage, on tape or DVD?

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

Hi,

Crap! :)

It's saturday morning and I'm at the clients office to perform this migration...
I've just added the 3 new extra disks to the array (which takes hours!)...
And then I wanted to migratie to raid 10.

It's not a real big problem if it isn't possible.
But raid-5 is so darn slow on this machine.
Booting up server 2008 takes for ages (from the beginning it had this problem).
So I hoped by migrating to raid10 this issue would be solved.

I do have a Windows Server Backup from last night but I'm a little worried to use that for recovery.

There will always be issues, problems or whatever.
So I think it's best to leave it at raid-5 then :(

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

OK, so I added the 3 new disks to the current array and from that point I was able to migrate the first 3 disks that I already had to raid 10! However, I thought it would be better to first merge the 3 old ones with the new ones. So I proceeded... But after that the migrate to raid 10 option was gone!!! Unfortunately there was no way to delete the 3 drives again from the array... So here I am with 6 drives in raid 5 with way to much storage and still slow read/write performance :(

Although I must say that the system looks faster with 6 drives now...

Re: ML350 G6 Raid 5 to Raid 10 migration possible?

Hi everyone,

I post here because we have the same HP system at my new job (Proliant ML350 G6). Originaly the system have 2 SAS Drives in a RAID 0.

I buy 2 new SAS Drive same model, same size to create a RAID 1+0 to keep the avantage of raid 0 and have a little reduncy in case of hard drive lost.

I boot on SmartStart CD to add my new SAS drive to the actual RAID 0.

After I migrate the RAID 0 to a RAID 1+0.....Transforming Complete after few hours without error.

But i doubt the RAID 1+0 is built correctly.

On the ACU I have 2 logical Unit. 1 for the RAID 0 and the other for the 1+0. When I take a look on the RAID 1+0 i can see all my SAS Drive split in 2 RAID 0.

I remove 1 drive to test RAID and test was not sucessfull. Cannot boot on Drive.

I dont think i can remove the Drive an rebuild RAID 1+0 from the Raid 0? Delete all Raid et rebuild from sracth then do a full restore is the best way to do it?

Printscreen of my ACU in attachment(sorry the ACU is in french)

Thanks for your help.
