ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

Dear sir / madam,

Our new ML350 - G6 suddenly gave memory errors on post. We have this server for 1 week now and everything was running fine.

So have 2x XEON e5520 and 12 gb. of HP DDR3 (RDIMM).

The memory was split up so 3x2 gb. for procesesor 1 and 3x2 for processor 2.
As per HP, I filled up the white bars.

This configuration worked for one week.
Yesterday I had to reboot and all the sudden
the BIOS gave error message (207) and told me the memory configuration was incorrect and it could only use 8 gb.

So I went to the webiste from HP and used the DDR3 memory tool to see if I made a configuration error.

The memory tool gave me an other suggestion (that's odd because the paper in the case of the server was suggestion something else), but it keeps getting worse, and now the server don't even send an image to my screen. (it just keeps black)

So I moved, and moved, and tried every possible memory configuration but at this time I'm not able to get more then 8 GB. working.

Things I have already done to hopefully solve this:

-Update the bios to the latest version.
-Clear NVRAM
-Power Cycle
-Purchased new HP memory for the ones that HP said were damaged or incorrect.

In the bios specifications/details on the hp website was a message that the 207 errors should be gone after installing the newest bios. I was very happy to read that, so I installed it.
But unfortunately no luck for me.

I'm really out of options now and hopefully someone could suggest a possible solution for me. The company can't run now with 8 gb. since there are 2 virtual instances on it to.

I'm looking forward to your replies.

Thank you,
Dennis

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

Is it the correct RAM for that server? Is it in the proper slots? two virtual servers on 12 GB. You sure that is enough? I would not do it on less than 16GB. 32-64GB is SQL or Exchange is one of them.

E5520
6GB (3 x 2GB) PC3-10600R (DDR3-1333) Registered DIMMs

Do all your sticks match this spec? Are you using all Registered ECC HP memory? Do you have them in the correct three slots for the two banks?

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

The 2 virtual instances are 32 bit OS and just eat 2 gb. each.

But that's not the problem right now.
The problem is that it only sees 6 gb.

As per HP, you first need to fill up the white slots.
The board have 18 slots (9 per processor), and 3 of the 9 (so 6 in total are white).
These white slots are the first channel.

So with the memory in these slots I get errors.
So I tried EVERY other order and put memory in other slots, but no luck.
I even used the HP DD3 config tool, and there suggestion didn't work either.

The memory is all the same, same type, same brand, same speed etc.

Hey,
I believe you should follow the placement of the DIMMs as to the quickspecs:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13241_div/13241_div.html#Memory

So slot 3,6,9 or ABC in the paper.

Does your VMs need both CPUs?
Maybe you can try to put the DIMMs on one CPU and see if they work there?

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

I've placed the memory in the white slots, which are slot A,B&C for processor 1 as you suggest.

When I put the other 3 bars in D, E, en F (also for the first processor), it doesn't even give me image on the screen and just stays black.

And when I put the 3 others in A,B and C for processor 2, (also the white slots) it tells me that 2 of them are in error...

I'm not sure if the VM's need 2 procs.
But in this case it doesn't matter because it won't work if I put all dimms in the proc 1 section either.

But have got those 12 RAM working 1 week ago until yesterday. And at that time they were all in proc1 section as you suggested.
But I then tried to place those 3 in the proc2 section because the VM's weren't running that smoothly.

And from that point nothing worked anymore...

Do you have a Carepaq on the server? I would replace the server board. I just had a server board replaced. The replacement failed banks 3 and 4. You could have a bad board or bad RAM. I would start with the server board.

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

The mainboard is going to be exchanged tomorrow by an HP Engineer.
When this will not solve the issue the server will be set as DOA.
But hopefully it's the mainboard so this company is up and running asap.

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

HP just repaired a DL 380.

First board: Killed by Firmware 9.2
Second board: DOA, Sunday 3am they brought it out
Third board: Flaky memory failed, Sunday 10am, they brought it out
Fourth board: Monday 5:30pm, finally worked.

I'm downloading firmware 9.2 right now.
Shouldn't I update the firmwares with this release ?

Re: ML350 - G6 Suddenly memory errors!!

I have 7 servers. 9.2 damaged two server boards on separate servers out of 7. If they are replacing it tomorrow, give it a shot. It can't get much worse.
