ML350 G6 - The speed of processor is being limited by system firmware

Hi,

We just bought a new ML350 G6 and i'm getting a lot of this event in the Windows System event viewer:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power
Date: 11/25/2009 10:28:14 AM
Event ID: 37
Task Category: (7)
Level: Warning
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: SERVERNAME

Description:
The speed of processor 7 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 0 seconds since the last report.

I'm getting this events 7 time per day and the number of the processor change.

The server is a Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain controller and he don't work hard.

Is there a firmware update to correct this problem?

What can i do to solve this Warning?

Thanks!

Jim

Re: ML350 G6 - The speed of processor is being limited by system firmware

Hi Jim,
It's the byproduct of new Processor Power Management feature in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
You can download the document and see how it affects the system performance.
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pnppwr/powermgmt/ProcPowerMgmt.mspx

Reduced performance state is 0 seconds so It's not a error message.
If you don't want to receive this event then simply turn off its support in BIOS.
1. Enter BIOS by pressing F9 on POST
2. Navigate to "Power Management Options" => "Advanced Power Management Options" => "Minimum Processor Idle Power State"
3. Choose "No C-States"

Re: ML350 G6 - The speed of processor is being limited by system firmware

Hi mark1234,

I am not sure about what you want me to do.

Here is my firmware version:

Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO) Firmware Version 1.78

Power Management Controller Firmware Version 2.9

System ROM (D22)

If I refer to your link, everything seams to be ok but do you tell me to use Power Capping?

Is it realy necesery for only 1 DC on a remote site?

Hi TarunJain,

I openned a post on Microsoft Partner Online Technical Community to be sure that I can safely ignore this warnning and the answer that I received said that this issue can be from an INT call to the BIOS for processor functionality, and a response is being generated that my processor speeds are being limited from full capacity by the motherboard - either for thermal reasons, or because there's some other issue and the processors are faulting.

They told me to contact my motherboard vendor to check if they have some Bios Update or firmware update.

They also told me to try to change my power profile in Windows so I chose High Performance instead of Balances and that don't change anything.

I opened a call at HP support (today)and they told me that it was a new error for their team and they asked me to reinstall Bios firmware.

If the problem persist they told me to reinstall de processor in the server and check if everything was fine and if my problem was not solve I'm gonna run HP Insight Diagnostics and call HP again.

I will try this step and let you know the result.

Thank for your help!

Jim

Jimmy
power capping not associated with your issue.

Ok but your link is about Dynamic Power Capping.

You give me this to check if my firmware version are ok?

Hi Jim,
Did you got a chance to observe system after selecting "No C-States" in the BIOS?

Re: ML350 G6 - The speed of processor is being limited by system firmware

Hi,

1- I installed the last BIOS firmware version.

2- I check the processor and is correctly installed.

Result: The Warning is still there.

3- I ran a complete test (10 loops) with HP Insight Diagnostic and no problems are detected.

4- I ran a second complete test (40 minutes) with HP Insight Diagnostic and RAM error are detected.

I don't think that is going to solve my first problem, but HP are going to send me a replacement kit.

5- I put Minimum Processor Idle Power State to No C-States and I don't have any warning events.

HP don't have other solution for the moment and they don't know why Windows give me this warning.

Like TarunJain said it's not an error, but it's not always 0 seconds and it's a little bit annoying. I just want to be sure there is no bigger problem behind that.

If I have update about this, I will let's you know.

Thanks!

Jim
