ML350 G6 cuts off when removable drive activated

We have an ML350 G6 server that has a removable drive bay in it. We have no problems swapping the drive out (using the manager program that came with the bay) but when we insert another drive and attempt to activate it, the server cuts off and the health light flashes red. We didn't have this problem with our G4p server and have even tried connecting the drive to a separate SATA controller card. Any thoughts on how to correct this? We need to be able to use this removable drive as before.
