ML350 G6 fails to blue screen when removable SATA drive added

We have removable SATA bays that we used for drive-based backup with prior ML350 servers. We're in the process of setting up a new G6 server and are having 2 issues:
1) When the drive is added it is not being recognized within Windows; a reboot is required for it to be recognized.
2) If the drive is removed while Windows is booted then the server fails to a HP (not Windows) blue screen indicating a hardware failure.

This is not consistent with the behaviour we experienced with earlier Generation servers. What steps can be taken to resolve this?

There are 2 removable sata drives plugged into 2 bays that are connected using sata power connectors and data connections to sata ports 2 and 3 on the motherboard. OS is Windows 2008.
