ML350 Gen8 - Supply power to PCI Express

We have installed a USB3.0 card into the PCI Express slot but it requires a SATA power connection to function properly. Whats the best way of getting power to the card? The two issues i can see are distance and how/where to run the cable?

Another option maybe, would a powered USB3.0 hub connected to the card solve the issue? From what ive read the SATA connector is only to provide the USB ports with power for devices, if i used a powered hub that would fix the issue?

Re: ML350 Gen8 - Supply power to PCI Express

After investigating different kinds of cards I found 4 port cards that needs power and 2 port cards without this requirement. However, I guess an active hub would solve the problem.

Hope this helps!

Re: ML350 Gen8 - Supply power to PCI Express

I installed a Startech 2 Port that had the SATA Power connector on it. I connected 2 x 2.5" USB HDD's direct to the card both of which appeared to work ok but when transfering large amounts of data im running into strange i/o problems i wasnt getting on USB2.0.

I will try a hub but ideally wanted to run power to the card, i just cant see an easy way of doing it.

2 HDDs may be a bit too much ... while investigating this I probably found the reason why my fingerprint driver did not work since months ...

Look out the device manager properties:
