ML350 Smart Array p600 with RAID 5 4x146GB SAS

Hello

I have an SBS2003 ML350 G5
I must replace the available 4x146GB hdds with 4x600GB.

The hard disks hang on a SmartArray P600 and it is the main server.

Can I make it by this steps:

booting from a bootable CD (e.g., Acronis)

building an image to an USB hdd

change the hdds

configuring the RAID 5

booting from CD (Acronis) and playing back the image?

Is there a better, sure variation without new installation?

Many thanks

Unlikely: I doubt Acronis will recognize the P600 and what's on it.

Doesn't Windows Server allow to do a full backup (basically an OS image)?  Then once you've replaced the disks and configured them as a RAID set, start the Server installation in recovery mode, and restore the backup.

On another note: please do everything you can do load the OS on a RAID1 set and separate it from data.  Yes that may necessitate a different controller and/or additional drives and arrays but well worth it in the long run.

Thank you for your answer. are you sure that acronis does not know the p600? windows backup does not support making an image! I would have to instal the server new. on system there runs a SYMANTEC BackupExec 11d. Unfortunately, I do not know whether it can create a complete image with all settings.

Windows Backup indeed doesn't support disk imaging but it does support full files and settings backup which will result in an identical Windows installation upon cold restore.  If you are worried about Windows activation - that's a different matter: indeed, the disk (volume, RAID set) signature will be different, and will likely force to re-activate Windows, but then, so will different MAC addresses on network ports.

Re: ML350 Smart Array p600 with RAID 5 4x146GB SAS

Re: ML350 Smart Array p600 with RAID 5 4x146GB SAS

At the and of the day..it works very fine.

Here are my steps to change to bigger Hdds without data lost

1. Boot the server with ACRONIS Advanced Server 9.7 CD

2. Image creating to internal LTO2 ( 300GB RAID5 -> 3h)

3. Label the old hdds (1,2,3,4) - if you want to re-boot the old configuration, you may in no case the reverse order of the drives

4. put in the new, bigger hdds

5. create a new Raid 5

6. boot with ACRONIS Advanced Server 9.7 CD

7. Recover the Image from the LTO to the new RAID (3h20min)

8. After Finishing - boot the server - the server started without error message

9. the partition size has not changed - c: = 290GB Unpartitioned = 850GB

10. Reboot and start with ACRONIS Disc Director 10 for Server

11. Partition c increases to maximum - new size 1.2 tb - duration: 10sec

12. started the server - everything works fine !!!

13. Smiling , smoking a lucky strike, drinking a good german beer
