I have a ml350 G2 server with win2k fully patched.
I recently bought 6 Hard drives (72 Gb ea) and I will like to know what posible combinations in RAID (hardware) I could use.
The main function of this server is GIS.
I already bought an internal RAID controller (add-in card) model 532
The disk are SCSI 320
The server currently have 3 18Gb SCSI 2 disk
I need at least 250Gb incuding OS (win2k)
thanks

SolutionYou could install all 6 72GB drives in the 6 bay drive cage and then order a two bay hot plug drive cage (244059-B21) you could install all but one of your drives. If you break it up into two arrays, you could use 2 drives for the O/S (2 x 18) in a RAID 1 attached to the two bay drive cage and the other six for data you would more than meet your need for 250GB for the GIS data.
4 x 72 = 288GB
- 1 for RAID 5 and
- 1 for a hot spare
if you wanted
You could use the extra disk in another server or hold on to it as a replacement at a later date.

Re: ML350 maximum and posible disk combinations
Please visit the following link and check details which says as follow :
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11430_div/11430_div.HTML
Internal Storage
ML3xx Two Bay Hot Plug SCSI Drive Cage
NOTE: The drive cage option kit (PN 244059-B21) has one 1├в drive bay and one 1.6├в drive bay. It installs in two available removable media bays. Part no :244059-B21
For Hard Drives :
Ultra320 ├в Universal Hot Plug
146.8-GB 10,000 rpm U320 Universal Hard Drive (1├в )
286716-B22
So i suppose it is a lot more then we have originally.

Re: ML350 maximum and posible disk combinations
But, on the 2 drive bay, I already have a DAT tape drive.
Can I install a 68 pin SCSI disk on the tape drive bus and then use the backplane connection for the RAID connected to the 532 controller?
I was thinking on maybe a raid5 setup on the 6 disk or even use the RAID and install the OS there.
Can I use the currently installed SCSI card (not the 532) for the raid?

Re: ML350 maximum and posible disk combinations
Yes, you could install the 6 x 72GB drives as one RAID 5 (360GB total logical volume space).
Then create two drives C & D. The only thing is with GIS as the intended function of this server, that the O/S, Swap and Map DB Files will cause contention. It may not be noticeable but I can assure it will be there.
Alternatively, can you run the tape drive in another server and backup this one over the wire? If so, then the two bay SCSI cage will fit and likely give you the best option.
If you do get the cage, make your you have the redundant power supply for the added fan. You will want the extra air draw behind that cage.
