ML350 with 641 Raid - how to add another drive to single system drive

Hi. My setup is ML350 with SA641 raid controller. 1 x 72Gb drive as system (server 2003) and 3 x 146Gb drives as RAID5 array. I want to add another 72Gb drive for fault tolerance on the system drive either as a mirror or as RAID 0+1. Can I do this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: ML350 with 641 Raid - how to add another drive to single system drive

Take a look at the quickspecs http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12067_div/12067_div.html and the "Online Management Features". The 641 supports online capacity expansion etc. You must have the BBWC option to be able to do all these online operations. The BBWC requirement is not explicitily mentioned but it is the case for all SA controllers. Most likely as soon as you add the new disk to the raid0 array(system drive) it will expand to the new disk in raid0. Then you have to do a raid level migration from 0 to 1 or 1+0.

Hi TTr. Your response was very helpful and worked perfectly. Should note for other readers that the first part (expanding the array with a new disk) took hours. The new disk then appeared as unused space and I was able to migrate the array to RAID 1+0 (which completed quicker). There was no need to reset the server and there was no loss of operation. Thanks!
