ML350p Gen8 Should this have ILO Essentials on it?

Greetings,

I purchased an ML350P Gen 8 server last April (2013).  I am using it as a VM host (ESXi 5.1).  When rebooting via ILO, I get a message that says something to the effect of:  The server is up and running, to monitor server after it has been started, you must upgrade your ILO version"  I don't have the exact message, hopefully someone will recognize this.

Anyway, I am spec-ing out 2 new servers, and I came across several posts in various forums that mention that ILO essentials comes with all Gen8 servers.

Is this new and my machine doesn't qualify or did miss something during my install?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

iLO Standard, or iLO Standard for BladeSystem is what ships on Gen8 systems. The Essentials license is supported on a subset of the ProLiant product line as an option.  Read the iLO comparison datasheet .PDF on the iLO information page

Re: ML350p Gen8 Should this have ILO Essentials on it?

Jimmy,

Thank you for the reply.  I saw that page before I posted and I didn't think it was clear.

Do I understand that page correctly?  That the essentials is only inlcuded on the Gen8 e-series?  Not my ML?  I didn't see my ML anywhere on the four offerings.

Or is that paper saying that "the ability to USE ILO on these systems is built in, but regardless of which systems, you still need to purchase the associated ILO license for that series"?

I am confused.

Thanks.

iLO Essentials is a license you must purchase seperately. iLO standard is what ships with the servers. The Essentials and Advanced license enable more features as shown in the PDF file from the link above.

You can install a trial license to test the additional feature sets, there is a button to click to download the trial on the main iLO page in the link above. Make sure the data and time is set properly on the server before you install the trial license

Re: ML350p Gen8 Should this have ILO Essentials on it?

Well, the time has finally come for me to order my new server.

I am purchasing a new ML350p Gen8 server in a few days. It is a rack/tower model. Nota blade server. I want to get the 3-year iLO Advanced licesne for it but no one I have been able to get in touch with can tell me the correct product number.  Nor have I found any good documentation detailing what part numbers are for which type of server.

The most recent numbers they have given me are:

1. E6U59ABE
http://www.provantage.com/hewlett-packard-hp-e6u59abe~7HEWS4NL.htm
Specs tab says "blade server"

2. E6U64ABE
http://www.provantage.com/hewlett-packard-hp-e6u64abe~7HEWS4NR.htm
Same here. SaysBlade.

3. 512485-B21
http://www.provantage.com/hewlett-packard-hp-512485-b21~7DECC1AH.htm
Doesn't mention blade, but is only 1 year. Not 3.

4. BD505A
http://www.provantage.com/hewlett-packard-hp-bd505a~7HPP96F1.htm
Like 1 & 2, it says blade....

Is there truly a difference in the software between blade and non-blade? Or is this a licensing thing.

If someone could definitively tell me which (if any) of the above are the correct product I would appreciate it. Or if none of these are correct, can someone please let me know the correct part number. Much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: ML350p Gen8 Should this have ILO Essentials on it?

Hello Jimmy,  Thanks again for the quick reply.  I looked this product up on HP:

https://h30094.www3.hp.com/product/sku/3955903

and under the "specs" tab, it says: "To be eligible to purchase software support, the Customer must be properly licensed to use the revision of the software product that is current at the beginning of the Support Agreement period; otherwise an additional charge may be applied to bring the Customer into service eligibility."

It sounds like this might be an "additional" 3 years of software updates that one can "renew" to, from their initial purchase of supprt.  It doesn't sound like the iLO advanced license itself.   Any thoughts?  Thanks.

I think that is just to extend the support for an additional 3 yrs. I think this is the page your looking for to purchase the iLO advanced license

Re: ML350p Gen8 Should this have ILO Essentials on it?

Yes, I think we're getting closer (this is the 1 year version) I am looking for the 3 year version.   I may have to get the 1 year, and then next year renew to the 3 you mentioned earlier.   I also just found this...

http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.aspx?cache=-736901651&culture=en-US&sku=10414181

Though in the specs tab under "software name"  it says:  Integrated Lights-Out Advanced Blade...

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
