ML370(G1) CPU Upgrade

Is there any alternative 1GHz CPU Upgrade for the ML370. I'm finding the Compaq part numbers difficult to come by, i.e.

187602-B21 or replacement part number 221536-001.

I'm currently running 2x600MHz CPU's on this server and want to stuff the fastest CPU's this box will handle, which are 1GHz PIII's.

I guess what I'm getting at is, is there an intel boxed PIII that can be used, or are the Compaq Parts OEM's, that are different than the Intel Boxed CPU's.

Hello Patrick,
You will have to use the HP/COMPAQ part No 221536-001 alongwith 157825-001 or the Option p/n 187602-B21(KIT) because they are specially caliberated for the server. You can order these parts from one of the followign sites:

Re: ML370(G1) CPU Upgrade

"Specially Calibrated" ? Interesting. Intel is doing "Calibration" now.

The 1000/133/256 CPU you seek is most rare these days. Not many were manufactured do to timing issues with the move to the faster arch. and away from the Slot 1. No matter if the CPU has a Compaq heat sink or OEM with no heat sink, they are impossible to find these day except for pulls. Intel assumed us that the Stepping does not have to "match" to use in a dual system as some believe. Besides there were only 3 steps for this CPU anyway.

If you can find one, use your old heat sink on it. We have a 1 or 2 still, and have a source for a few new if you wish, just let us know.

Re: ML370(G1) CPU Upgrade

I know where I can get these CPU's, but it's not cost effective to spend $950 /each on just the 1GHz CPU's, when I can buy a 2-way server with these off ebay for $1400.

If I could get them new for what they're worth I'd buy them.

If you do know who carries these please post the URL, so I can compare their prices with the ones I already have. The lowest price I've found is about $750 /each.

Thanks.

Re: ML370(G1) CPU Upgrade

Found the Compaq 221536-001 for $712.50 each so I snatched 2 of them them up. Still seems like highway robbery, but I guess when things are not in circulation people can charge whatever they figure people will pay.

I ran into the same problem when attempting to add a second processor to our server. The project manager wasn't willing to fork over the $450 at the time (~1 yr ago), so I ended up purchasing 2 PIII 933/133 compaq spares for ~250. I don'think you would notice the difference between a 933 and 1G.
