ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

The support documents list a maximum disk size of 74 GB for the smart array 5i. Is it possible to use larger disks with 140 or 300 GB, for example HP 350964-B22?

Something is wrong here. You either mistyped the server model and generation or the controller you are making reference to is another one.

The ML370 G2 does not have the 5i Controller. the 5i controller came in the DL old series and is embedded in the system board. Except for the one in the DL380 G2

Please reply with the correct info so that I can double check for you.

Re: ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

The ML370 G2 has the 5i as an option - 263697-291 , so I don't think there is a mistake...

According to the specs supported HDDs in the server are :

Ultra320 SCSI ├в Universal Hot Plug
36.4GB 10,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286713-B22

72.8GB 10,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286714-B22

146.8GB 10,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286716-B22

18.2GB 15,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286775-B22

36.4GB 15,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286776-B22

According the 5i for ml370 g2 , the only one HDD bigger than 72 is

146.8GB 10,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1" 286716-B22

Regards

72.8GB 15,000 rpm, U320 Universal Hard Drive, 1├Р 286778-B22

Ultra320 SCSI ├в Non-Hot Plug
36.4GB 10,000 rpm, U320 Non-Hot Plug Hard Drive, 1├Р 271832-B21

Re: ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

Good catch... the only ML supporting 5i...

The controller supports up to 32 logical drives, for this and some other SCSI SA controllers the maximum logical drive size is +/- 2TB depending on the model so you may whant to keep this in mind.

With reference to the person that said ML370 G2's did not come with the 5i card.
I have over 50 in service that are running on the Compaq 5i card.
The ML370 G2 motherboard has a specific place for the 5i card just behind the CPU's.

With reference about larger disks.
I have one machine running with 150GB SCSI disks. They are just off the shelf retail Seagate units. And i put them into the Hot swap carriers.
Ran the Firmware Upgrade CD, re-flashed the disks, and the 5i picked them up as 150GB each.

Been working perfectly for over 1 year now.

Re: ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

Thanks for all your replys. I do not see any reason why larger disks should not work with the 5i, but the specs don't mention them. Probably it is simply too old an not updated any more. But I still hope somebody has tried it already.

Re: ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

Even 300 GB SCSI should work, as they are specified as compatible for other servers that run with 5i. These quickspecs are old and are no longer updated.

There is no technical nor logic reason why HDDs larger than 146 GB can't work on the machine.

Re: ML370 G2 + SmartArray 5i, max disk size

Finally I have tried it and had no problems using three 300 GB disks as RAID 5. Thanks for your help.
