ML370 G2 and Gigabit Cu NIC

Hello,

we try to install a new NIC (290563-B21,
HP NIC NC7771 1000 Copper 64bit 133MHz PCI-X)
in "old" machine (Proliant ML 370 G2).

If I look in the QuickSpec´s the new NIC should run with the server.

PCI-X Hot-Plug 133 MHz:
(PCI-X compatible with: 64/100, 64/66, 64/33
or 32/33 IO-Slot --> at lower performance)

... but the server doesn´t start after installing the NIC (we tried several ports).

Now we are looking for a solution:
- make it sense to try a Bios Upgrade on the server ?
- is the NIC o.k. or defect
- is the original intended NIC (only as spare-part available) the only solution

Hi Thomas,

NC7771 is not listed in the quickspecks, which means it was not tested with this server.So nobody can guarantee that the NIC will work with the server. I dont think the NIC is defective its just not supported.

dms is correct but, you know seeing here a lot people that use not supported configuration of course you can try.

- make it sense to try a Bios Upgrade on the server ?
yes try updating the BIOS

- is the NIC o.k. or defect
if the card does work in the server means that is bad, you have another server to test it

- is the original intended NIC (only as spare-part available) the only solution.
well those are the NIC card tested so they must work

this answer doesn´t really help me.

But for what reason is the new NIC compatible:

Once again. The fact that the server has a PCI bus does not mean that you can connect any PCI card on it. Even if it's from HP.
The QuickSpecs are published with a reason, and that is to tell customers what works and what does not work.
If the device you purchase is NOT on QuickSpecs, it would probably not work, and, unless you have the means to modify firmware or hack the chips, there's no way to make it work.
