ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

Hi,

Had one of these old timers for a while now. But noticed the 5304 card in a 32bit/33mhz slot. Works fine but would like to squeeze a little more performance out of it.

Installed the card into the 66mhz slot and the server no longer posts. In a 33mhz slot, fine, the server comes back up.

Resetted NVRAM and have the latest Firmware patches for this old unit.

Any one experienced this kind of problem? perhaps the controller is too old? the product sheet suggests otherwise (64bit/66mhz)

Thanks for looking.

Dan while controller in 32/33 had you tried update firmware to 3.54? On the rare occasion what you described sometimes happened.

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/20193.html

Use 64/66 slots for better performance
5304 is Universal card and should be Compatible with 5v and 3.3v PCI Slot

if all Updates done bring Server down Remove 5304 power up without it From F9 clear NVRAM, power down and install 5304 on the primary bus which ever comes with 64/66, power up without cable attached and check if Server see it at POST, after should be easy.

Re: ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

Craig,

That was quick! I've downloaded the 7.20 Firmware maintenance pack. This did upgrade the version to it's latest.

I also downloaded 7.40, but no further patching was required.

Not sure what version 7.20 upgraded the 5300, but i'll check.

Is 3.54 the latest firmware ?

Thanks again.

Dan yes - 3.54 is the latest firmware

BTW, I'm not Craig, for some reason it posted with different name

Re: ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

Hi,

Yes, the firmware is at 3.54.

Done the steps suggested. Still no good.

However, after the NV Ram erase, unit power cycled and the 5304/128 card placed in the primary 66mhz slot.

The 5304 onboard lights do not come on and both card slot lights show green. Even though only one 66mhz slot is populated. The unit shows green lights on the front but nothing on the screen, even after a few minutes.

Any further thoughts?

Re: ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

Hi,

On server we have 2 kind of pci slots

1)Two 64-bit/66-MHz full-length PCI Hot Plug slots with peak transfer rates of 533 MB/s 3.3 Volt or universal cards
2)Four 64-bit/33-MHz full-length PCI expansion slots with peak transfer rates of 266 MB/s 5 Volt or universal cards

where as card is PCI 2.2 Compliant

Have you validated the same card on different server that it is working or not.

Nothing is impossible

Re: ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

I cannot test the card as this is the only server with 64bit 66mhz slots.

The card initialises fine on a 64bit 33mhz slot.

So, unable to test on a different server.

Is this card checked on all slots in this server ?

Re: ML370 G2 with 5304/128 should work in a 64bit/66mhz slot

I have placed the card in different slots on the 33mhz side. Never had a problem with it posting.

However, can guarantee that placing the card in either 66Mhz slot results in the server coming on, but not posting/displaying anything on the monitor.

It did post twice at different occasions giving
"Type 2 Header PCI Device has been Detected"

The BIOS will not configure this card. It must be configured properly by the OS or driver

Before just hanging completely.

It seems the card might need replacing.

Also, the card now reports that advanced caching features disabled until the battery has recharged.

Does this give any further clues?

Thanks a million.
