ML370 G3 Upgrade Questions

I would like to upgrade a ML370 G3. It currently has two 2.8GHZ/400 FSB cpus. What is the fastest CPU, I can use on the server? After replacing the CPUs, I remember only having to change SW1 switch settings. What setting should I use? Thanks!

Re: ML370 G3 Upgrade Questions

Kevin, these are possible upgrades for your server:
===
Processor
Intel Xeon 3.2-2MB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
352568-B21
Intel Xeon 3.2-1MB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
333714-B21
Intel Xeon 3.06-1MB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
333713-B21
Intel Xeon 3.06-512KB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
257916-B21
Intel Xeon 2.8-1MB/533MHz Processor Option Kit
352567-B21
Intel Xeon 2.8-512KB/400MHz Processor Option Kit
257915-B21
===

But i think that's a not a good idea to upgrade such an old server - i'm pretty sure that you can find a new one with a price close to two CPUs from list above and it will be faster. Well... Only if you aren't going to buy CPUs on eBay :)

Re: ML370 G3 Upgrade Questions

Yes, it's old but there are no plans to replace the server at this time, just upgrading it. So, all I need to is get two option kits, replace both CPUs. What about any switch settings on the motherboard to be able to use 3.2GHZ/533 FSB CPUs? Thanks!

Here's a manual, see p95 for switch configuration.

Re: ML370 G3 Upgrade Questions

You cannot upgrade a 400mhz FSB ML370 G3 to a 533mhz system.  They have a different motherboard.  I have tried to get a 400mhz motherboard to run at 533mhz by changing the switch settings on page 4-16 of the Server Maintenance and Service Guide and it does not change the FSB.  During the POST it tells you that this system does not support 533mhz FSB and it will boot, but at 400mhz.  Here are the motherboard part numbers:

290559-001  400mhz FSB

316864-001  533mhz FSB

I am posting this to an old thread to help anyone out there who was trying to maximize the performance of an ML370 G3 as I did.  I saw this post originally and ordered the 3.2/2MB/533mhz processors and they will not run at 533mhz on the 290559-001 motherboard.
