ML370 G4: Will Windows recognize data arrays after OS array is changed?

Server: ML370 G4 with Smart Array 642 controllers

RAID Configuration:

Controller 1 - two mirrored drives - C:  (Windows 2003 R2 32-bit installed)

Controller 2 - two pairs of mirrored drives - D: and E: (data only)

Plan:

1. Remove the two C: drives and set aside

2. Install two new drives and install Windows 2008 R2 64-bit

Question:

Will Windows recognize the D: and E: drives after I change the operating system so that I do not have to reformat D: and E: and lose the data on these drives?

Hi,

I am not sure if you have sorted this or not.

The controller and the disks store the raid configuration.

If you don't make a mistake and tell the Windows 2008 R2 installer to format the drives, your data should be safe.

If your D: and E: drives are formatted as traditional "basic disks", there certainly should not be problems.

If they are formatted as "dynamic disks", they should work in 2008 R2 too, although I'm not an expert on that.

(The Dynamic Disks seem to have been deprecated in Windows 2012, in favor of Storage Spaces. But I don't think a ML370 G4 will be a suitable platform for Windows 2012 anyway.)

To be safe, I would remove your two pairs of mirrored drives - D: and E: (data only) also, until you have the new OS up and running on the two new drives.
Once you reinsert them and start up the server again, they should be picked up in Disk Manager.

Thanks

Mark...
