ML370 Memory upgrade

I wanted to attempt to add more Ram to a very old Compaq ML370 tower server I have. It's got two DIMMs available. However, I need to find out the following:
1. Is there documentation available on how to get the tower style case open?
2. How do I know how much RAM this old motherboard can support?

It currently has 128mb in Dimm1 and 512 in Dimm2. It has a 133 bus and a 1000 megahurts pentium 3 so it needs all the help it can get.

Thanks.

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Hello,

>> Is there documentation available on how to get the tower style case open?
- Need some strong fingers :)
- Open the front bezel
- Loosen the two thumbscrews securing the large access panel
- Slide the large access panel back, then pull it away from the chassis

>> How do I know how much RAM this old motherboard can support?
- Maximum memory capacity is 4 x 1 GB
- 133-MHz Registered ECC SDRAM DIMM

Thanks

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Thanks for the quick help guys. I was going to try and throw in some old SDRAM from a machine with 100mhz bus clock, but would that even work? I'd rather not waste my time if there is absolutely no chance of it happening.

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Also...

I tried tugging on that front cover a little before posting on here to make sure that was the first step. You weren't kidding about the strong fingers. I'm 100% sure I'm going to break that thing upon removal. Oh well it will give it some character...

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Hi,

Forget about putting PC100 memory into this system - it won't work. Memory must be 3.3V 133Mhz Registered SDRAM with ECC.

I have put together a small chart with memory layout, type required, option and spare part numbers etc. Please see attached file.

The Option part number is a Compaq sales part number. The Spare part number is used for service calls by engineers. You can obtain parts using either option or spare part numbers on Ebay for example.

Here using Spare Part numbers for 512Mb and 1Gb dimms....

You don't have to fit dimms in pairs on this system so you could obtain a single 1Gb dimm, 2 X 1Gb dimms or 2 X 512Mb dimms depending on your spending limits.

The side panel should come off with a little help. The removal procedure is included at the bottom of the attached file.

I hope this helps.

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Brian,

Thanks for the additional help. That word document is perfect.

I have two more quick questions. Does it have to be an HP brand? I found one on ebay with the same voltage/bus but it's kingston and much cheaper in price:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kingston-512mb-133mhz-Sync-ECC-SDRAM-DIMM-1-48-S-H_W0QQitemZ150152705331QQihZ005QQcategoryZ14918QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I also found a HP 1gb module but its 3.5V. Would that work by any chance?

Hello,

It depends whether the Machine still has HP Support Warranty :)

>> I also found a HP 1gb module but its 3.5V. Would that work by any chance?
Be careful, the Server Motherboard might just get burnt off :)

Thanks

Re: ML370 Memory upgrade

Hi,

The Kingston memory should be OK. I think the 3.5V reference for the 1Gb dimm is possibly an error but just in case, avoid it.
