ML380 G3 Smart Array 5i array reconfiguration question

We have a ML380 G3 server with a SmartArray 5i controller in an embedded slot. There are 5 146GB drives. 4 are in a raid 1+0 configuration (280GB). The 5th is a standalone raid 0 drive. Both have logical drives connected to them. We want to convert the raid 1+0 to a raid 5. Can we do this directly or do we need to add a 6th drive with at least 280gb capacity then move the existing array to that drive. Once the array is moved off destroy the raid 1+0 and convert it to a Raid 5. We can then move the data back from the 6th drive.

Re: ML380 G3 Smart Array 5i array reconfiguration question

Hi Neil

It should be possible, to convert directly.

When it has finished you will have 146GB free space, to extend The LUN (If supportet by OS) or create a new LUN.

As a precaurtion. Alwaas ensure you got a good backup, when working with storage.

Re: ML380 G3 Smart Array 5i array reconfiguration question

Would it be done from the Raid Configuration utlity or from the BIOS configuration utility?

Re: ML380 G3 Smart Array 5i array reconfiguration question

You must use the Array Configuration Utility.
You can't do it from the ORCA (BIOS).

So it's a on-line operation :)
