ML570 drive issue

I am servicing a ML570 with a Smartarray SCSI 5300 array. The system drive is setup as Raid 0+1(slots 0 and 1) with a spare(slot 2). Recently, drive 0 was taken off line by the contoller(Its fault indicator was on.) and drives 1 and 2 were working. I acquired a new drive and put it in slot 0. I thought it would be rebuilt by the controller once it was installed. Instead, it shows fault as did the drive which was replaced. Does something else need to be dome?
