ML570 installing SCO

I am trying to install SCO Openserver 5.0.7 on a ML570 g2 system.
The system has 4 processors, 16Gig RAM, a 6402 controller card with 12 18gig HD's configured in a raid 10 as a single drive.
I can start the installation using the ciss driver from the latest efs, go through all of the prompts including entering the sizes of the file systems that I want to setup, but then it fails with "device transfer read error". I think the failure comes when the setup program tries to write the fs's info to the disk.
I have run the hardware diagnostic program from the smart start CD through multiple cycles with no hardware errors found.
Anyone have any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
P.S.
I am not a SCO expert, but I know just enough to be dangerous.
