Memory quantity error

With 4GB of memory installed, the count-up in the POST shows slightly less than 4GB(approx 200MB short) but the whole 4GB is initially shown on the boot screen. All 4GB servers show the same thing.

Re: Memory quantity error

I am getting the same error on a server that we upgraded the memory to 4 GB. At the POST screen and from within Windows the total amount of memory is approx 3700 MB. There was some reference to not the total amount of memory being available within the Hardware Configuration Utility. I went there to check and see what was there. I can't really afford to have this server up and down to check it out.

I also reflashed the BIOS to the newest version today and it didn't help. Please help. Thanks.

Re: Memory quantity error

On some servers the upper 256mb of 4gb installed is reserved for memory mapped io - depending on the io devices installed the amount of memory apparently missing can vary. It's not missing - (if it's reported on the initial boot screen as being there) - it's just allocated to a specific purpose.

Re: Memory quantity error

Okay, heres a new one... with 6GB of memory installed the POST is showing approx 6GB but Win 2000 Adv is only showing 3.7 GB. Adv Server docs list 8GB as max.

Re: Memory quantity error

Search for info on the boot.ini switches /PAE, /USERVA(:3030), and /3GB.

from MS : "...using only the /3GB switch allocates 1 GB to the kernel and 3 GB to the User-mode space."

Re: Memory quantity error

Hi

Don't forget the Hotplug Ressources Reservation which takes up some memory during post ( up to 40Mo per hotplug slot used )

Or else , of course /PAE for large Memory support
