Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

OS: Windows 2000 server SP4
Our system has three SCSI 18.2GB Disks
The Raid controler is a Smart Array 5i
All Those Three disks have been integrated in one logical unit Raid 0 mode
We download RAID configuration utility version 7.15.19.0
We try to use migration option to migrate to Raid 5
The configurator offer only Raid 0 option

1- Is it possible to migrate from Raid 0 to Raid 5
2- What is the best solution to do it, without re-installing the entire system

Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

I think you first have to add another physical disk drive to your disk array to gain space for the RAID-5 parity data.

Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

HI,

Yes add more physical disk on server the use ACU on the server then go ahead with addign more disk then migration. Better is to go through user manual of ACU for more details.

Do check the attachement also for the same.

Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

Like Uwe and Prashant say, you need to add at least one more disk to the array before you can convert to RAID 5. This is not for space, it's just because 3 physical disks are the minimum you can have in a RAID 5 configuration. If you add 2 more disks, you can have RAID 5 with an online spare (which isn't used at all unless one of the other disks fails). Just add the new disk(s) to the current logical array and you should be able to convert it from RAID 0 to RAID 5.

The only other thing to check is that you have the most recent versions of the array driver for Windows, the ACU and the firmware for the adapter. It looks like you're ok on the firmware an ACU.

Seth

Thanks all for replying
1st- As there are already 3 disk sin the array , why one fourth one ??
2nd- May we have to add a DD of same type or size or can we just add an 80GB IDE DD for migration and remove it from array after??

Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

Hello Philippe,

I assume your (RAID-0) logical disk is currently taking up all space in the disk array? Then you need more space in the disk array for the RAID-5 parity data. RAID-0 is just striping without any redundancy.

You can add a SCSI disk with a higher capacity (e.g. 36 GigaBytes) to the disk array, but the SmartArray controller uses fixed formulars and the usable size is limited by the smallest disk in an array.

I don't think you can add an IDE disk to the disk array, if that was the question, because all disks must be connected to the controller's SCSI busses.

What you might be able to do is:
- copy all data from the (RAID-0) logical disk to the IDE disk

- delete the (RAID-0) logical disk

- create a new logical disk in RAID-5

!Please note that the new logical disk will only be about 36 GigaBytes in size, not 3*18!

- copy the data back from the IDE disk to the new (RAID-5) logical disk
.

Re: Migrating from Raid 0 to Raid 5 on ML370 G2 Smart Array 5I How??

That is the answer i was afraid to hear.
It means re installing the all system

To avoid IT, can i make a clone of the logical disks (ie c: and d:) on my ide disk , format disks , rebuilds array in raid 5, build c: and d; logical disk and back from clone(s)

That you CAN do. But will you have enough space? You will have only half the space when finished.

He will keep about 66% (2/3) of the former space.

Hi !
at the end of your first text, there's:
Disques physiques d├Г┬йfaillant

are there some "Disques physiques d├Г┬йfaillant" ?
i suppose not.

the last solution is the good one, making a clone (with norton ghost or powerquest drive image)of the whole system.
Like this, you won't have to install it again, and ide device is cheap.
You can also use a dos bootable floppy with network support to clone the partitions to any place of your LAN to avoid buying an ide device.
The remaining problem is th one of the space left after raid5 takes space for parity, approximately 33% of total space:52079Mo=>34727Mo .
you see where the problem
